newbie help - what am in doing wrong?

hi all - i will try and talk you through this as best as i can - so i don’t confuse myself or others!

i have my own domain name and space - but after the initial homepage it reroutes to my .mac account - and all is reasonably well

but… i would like to use the space given over to my own domain space and cancel .mac - i downloaded the trail of freeway 4 pro and am using fetch to upload it to my space and it’s there alongside my main page - but it’s not actually loading up as a webpage - it comes up as a directory with links underneath and when i click on them they download to my desktop

i have spent two days on it now and am no further forward so any help would be very much appreciated

anyone able to help

many thanks -

It is always best to use Freeway to upload your site. Set the
parameters when you first use File/Upload in Freeway. There are many
good arguments for doing this (many of which you will find in posts
by knowledgeable people such as Keith Martin - the issue tends come
up fairly regularly). Use Fetch for anything that is external to the
FW pages.

Maybe you are not designating your home page properly? Make sure your
uploaded home page is called index.html and remove any default index
page from your host. When you say “my main page” what does that mean?
If you already have a home page you need to link it to your uploaded
files. Or is the Freeway material in a folder? In which case you need
to include the folder name in the url ie www.domain.com/freeway/
index.html

Perhaps you need to give some more information. Hope this gives you
some clue.

cheers
Pete

hi pete - cheers for getting back to me - to be honest i was trying to publish a page unconnected to the main pages of my site which only i would be able to connect to with the correct www.

this was to test its ease and whether it was gonna be suitable for me (ie: easy!)

my main page is mydomainname.co.uk - this is then linked to my .mac webspace

the stuff i am uploading is all in a folder and freeway is not recording any errors so i assume it is uploading but i can’t find it by typing in what i think will be the domain name but i do get a page that comes up like this

Index of /test/

v Name Last Modified Size

Parent directory
Media/ 16 Feb 08 19:55 4.0Kb
Site Folder/ 16 Feb 08 19:55 4.0Kb
test.freeway 16 Feb 08 19:55 23.7Kb

and if i click onto the links it downloads to the desktop - very confusing indeed!

for me anyway - any help would be appreciated pete

Hi Darren,

What you are doing is uploading the Freeway document itself, plus the
Media folder, and the Site folder as well.

In fact, the Media folder is there just as a convenience, a place to
store your original graphics - not the ones that Freeway produces
when it publishes your pages. And the Freeway document is not
supposed to be uploaded either! Freeway publishes your web pages
from your Freeway document. The document itself is not what goes
online.

Choose File > Upload and type in your upload details just as you use
them in Fetch. Freeway will upload the contents of the Site folder
for you, and manage your site files automatically. (So yes, it’ll be
very easy!)
But first, go there using Fetch and delete those files and folders.
THEN upload from Freeway.

and if i click onto the links it downloads to the desktop - very
confusing indeed!

If you click the Media or Site Folder links you’ll go into those
folders. If you click the “test.freeway” link you’ll just download
that file - because that’s not the kind of file a browser can
display; it isn’t a web page, it is a document that publishes web
pages.

I think you’ll find it worth going to the Softpress site and
downloading the PDF guides:
http://www.softpress.com/support/usermanuals.php

It is also definitely a good idea to use Freeway to do the uploading
until you hit a situation where you absolutely, positively, have to
upload something separately. That’s rare, very rare.

Anyway, welcome! Keep trying, I’m sure you’ll get the hang of it soon

  • and I’m sure you’ll find it an enjoyable way to make web sites.

In the Inspector pane in Freeway what is the filename of the page you
want to test? It should end in .html. This is what your URL will need
at the end in order to appear in your browser.

It looks like you are uploading the Freeway file not the published
site. This is where FW Upload comes in so useful. Even if you forget
to publish (Freeway converts your layout into HTML at the Publish
stage) the site manually FW will automatically publish as you upload.
It will also automatically manage the site files when you make
revisions too.

In FW go to File/Upload and click it. Enter the equivalent details
from your Fetch upload preferences for this site into the dialogue
that appears. Then OK the upload. Freeway will generate the site and
assemble it onto your webspace. If you want, create a new folder with
Fetch and then get FW to upload your test pages into that.

Believe me, I’m no web expert but FW really does make this easy but I
suppose, like learning to ride a bike, it’s the first 20 yards that
are the hardest.
