Newbie needs help

How do you size your webpages so that they will expand/contract to fit whatever browser the user has?

If this isn’t possible, what is a good standard size?

Thanks

Hi!

If you are using Freeway Express then you can make items flexible by selecting them and ticking the Width Can Grow option in the Inspector’s Item Output Settings (the third icon at the top).

In Pro you can give layered items a percentage based width and you can specify an undefined height so that the item is only ever as large as the text inside it. You can also set them to be a certain distance from the browser edges by setting the inset for each side of the item.

There is a Flexible Layout section in the Freeway Reference Guide on page 11-1. The reference guide can either be found in your Freeway 4 folder in your applications folder or on our website here http://www.softpress.com/support/usermanuals.php

Optimal sizes? That’s all down to the types of visitors you are expecting. If you expect most visitors to have high res monitors then go high, if not then stay low. I tend to use 800 width as there are still a number of people using 800x600 resolution. The best way to know what your vistors are using is to place some tracking system such as Google Analytics on your pages.

Every now and then question comes up that leads one in the direction of a scrap of info that solves a niggling uncertainty about a particular method. Often it’s a case of knowing where to look and in this case the pointer to settings made with percentages rather than units has given me one of those 'I’m so thick, it was there all along" moments while reading the Freeway tome.

So thanks for the question and the answer…

cheers
Pete
