News Cycle Navigation & PE

Is there a way to do the following with the News Cycle action

  1. How do we make buttons to navigate between news articles?

  2. Would buttons pause the cycling?

  3. Will buttons allow for a way to get to the news articles when javascript is disabled?

Look forward to your input, Dave

Use ScriptyFader or Carousel instead. The NewsCycle doesn’t have any
navigation, it’s just a constant “news crawl”.

No.

    javascript is disabled?

A simple trick will do this. Make your news source an inline DIV
within the body of your page. Then, when the page loads without
JavaScript enabled, the entire list of news will be visible (since it
won’t have been removed by the script. Because it’s inline, it pushes
the content below it out of the way. When the page loads with
JavaScript, that element will be missing entirely, and the rest of the
page will fill in the gap.

OK,

We were looking for a way to fade between content (graphics, HTML text and such) with a fall back for non javascript enabled browsers. The fader action does not appear to do this, as for the carousel action it is really great… but as you have advised before it is not capable of the fading feature.

We will give your inline trick, from #3 a try and perhaps this will accomplish the right result even without the navigation capability. Thank you for your help and input.

Hi Walter

I’ve been using your NewsCycle action successfully as a replacement for the Fading Slideshow action.

It’s probably an oversight on my part but I don’t seem to be able to enter the fade duration in anything but whole seconds. When I apply the action the duration is set to 0.6 seconds. However if I try to change this to say, 1.2 seconds it is rounded down to 1 second. Similarly 1.6 seconds is rounded up to 2 seconds. Is there a way I can get the decimal input to stick?

One other great addition would be a tick box option to ‘pause on mouseover’. I know that it’s not as simple as that but I find it hard to come to a compromise over the delay between items. Too slow and some users may not realise it actually changes; too fast and they don’t get enough time to view/click on the item until it changes. If the user could stop the fading by placing their mouse over the item and then when they moved away the cycle could continue that would be a most welcome addition.

Thanks again for working on this and your other actions.

Ah, I see what the issue is. I am using an action-number field, and I think those force an integer. I will have to see if there’s another input type I can use.

I just revved NewsCycle to version 0.3, fixing this bug as well as another one from the same source – the fade duration had the same issue. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. And thanks to Joe Billings and Tim Plumb for the syntax trick to get an action-number to accept a float!

And now to 0.3.1, fixing a bug Joe notices with decimal numbers and various European keyboard settings.
