Consistently in different browsers across different platforms? No.
Seriously, it can’t be done. Plugins claim their section of the
screen, and some environments (especially those within Microsoft
Windows) don’t let other things sneak on top.
Thanks David and Keith … I was beginning to think it wasn’t possible as, I think, I’ve tried just about every combination of techniques … yes I can include the text in the .swf but the effect I really wanted was for the swf to loop and the text to appear a second or two after load so I can sacrifice that “refinement” but the bigger problem is; to get the swf small in file size the “Greetings” text looks rubbish (because of the compression) when included in the animation … I’ll work on a tidier variation of this:

In that case I guess After Effects just rasterises the text, which is a shame.
Flash itself also has the ability to render text as vector shapes or
as ‘Flash Text’ which is ASCII-style data plus embedded fonts. Either
of those would produce crisp results with no compression artefacts
and very little file size overhead.
Did you try adding the wmode attribute to the Flash movie. This is
taken from a post of mine from a while back:
Select […] your Flash items and go to Item>Extended. In the
dialog that appears click New, then, in the next dialog that appears
type “wmode” in the Name field and “transparent” in the Value field.
I hope this helps.

Hi Keith I think After Effects can preserve the vectors but I’ve been rendering out as a full res. .mov and making the .swf in “Video2SZF” which makes a really small file compared to After Effects but but but … Mr Billings’ trick worked, heavens knows why but adding the wmode / transparent has solved it, I didn’t even think about doing that 'cause. of course, i didn’t need the transparency for this particular movie.

Just to say thanks to David for sending me the link to this post and Bill for writing the solution to my problem. It is amazing how different IE reacts compared with Firefox, Safari etc… I did not like the spacing on the carousel i had placed on my page so i wanted to overlay some graphics. Looked great on my mac but the flash file punched through when i viewed it in Parallels XP [on my mac - no PCs in this house at the mo] Thanks again and i’ll start to look through freeway talk for some more great advice. Well done guys.
