Not sure i like this new forum

Five. My last post didn’t appear. Here it is again. More or less. Post titles don’t all get organised into one thread. Although I can see 15 thread titles in the FreewayTalk forum, in fact they belong to only 10 threads.

Six some characters get mangled. An apostrophe may appear as “’”

Michael, I seem to be getting your posts okay via Mail.

Hopefully things will settle down when everybody gets the hang of sending a post via email.

Should there be some instructions on use, as a guide? Especially with the problems of editing subject lines, and re. Re: Re: … that start new threads.

I notice on the web forum, URL’s do not display in a new window. Perhaps put this on the fix list?

Is there going to be any future provision for putting images on the forum?

Do text links set in html email posts create a link? Test below.

Looks like the new forum will stop the SPAM problem - because there will be nobody on it ! - unless this jumble is sorted out - A real pity I think

Suggestion(s):

-Please add some feedback to hte user about ‘which’ message are new for them. The #of new messages notice next the the categories is nice, but the user is left to their own devices to figure out where the new messages stop and the old ones begin

  • The page numbers are a bit weird. When viewing a category, the page numbers show as 15 of 15, but yet the messages shown are ordered newest first. that, in conjunction with the page numbers, makes the pseudo-sort look like this in my brain:
(1 = oldest, higher numbers are newer posts)
    page 1:[4,3,2,1] page 2:[8,7,6,5] page 3:[12,11,10,9]
And the category starts on page 3?? It seems there are two sorts that are incongruent, that to break the pages apart, and that to display that page to the user. The page break is oldest-to-newest, but each page is then newest-to-oldest

Hi all. I just downloaded the Freeway Express 4 Trial and joined here as there is no doubt I’ll be needing as much input and insight as is possible and Forums are usually invaluable. Looks like I’ve walked into “the mother of all mailing lists”.

As the traffic cop would say “Move along. Nothing to see here.”

I hope it’s just bad timing on my part and the powers that be get this controversy resolved and the Forum back to the useful tool it was designed to be. I also hope that FreewayTalk is not an indication of the usefulness and ease of use of Freeway itself.

I think what might be helpful with organizing the threads would be to have a hierachical view showing only the first line of each response and responder name and date below the original post. Clicking on a response would expose the whole post with “accordian” effect?

Steve, welcome. Yes i’m afraid your timing is a bit off ;). No worries though, it will all be sorted out after we all bash each other a bit about the head. :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s a cool idea. Chuck, could you please start a new thread with
this idea? This thread is about to close, due to over-use. It’s
approached the limit of what they call in American football “piling
on”. And the level of meta-discussion has caused any signal, such as
your constructive suggestion, to be lost in the noise.

I think the ability to edit a post was bad because we had a percentage of people on email only. It’s just as easy to correct yourself with a follow-up post or to reply with a “never mind, problem solved.” Even as a web-only user, I never liked going into a thread to find the person had deleted the content and replaced it with “problem solved.” One of the reasons for the web forum was to have a searchable archive of problems and hopefully solutions.

One suggestion that I have for the new forum is one thing we tried to get people to do in the phpBB forum, which was to put their OS, hardware, and FW version in their sig. At the very least, I think it would be a useful aspect of the People profiles to be able to choose FW version and OS so that others can see. It would be even more helpful to have that as part of each post, perhaps as smaller gray text at the bottom or something similar.

Ahh… growing pains. This reminds me of when we instituted a blog format at work. 2000+ change resistant engineers burnt up the library email with complaints.

But aside from that. The lack of quotes doesn’t bother me none. In fact I prefer it as there is less screen clutter. BUT… the fixed width is a definite no-no. For anyone with visual problems, such as yours truly, the fixed width is a killer. I can’t increase font size without destroying the content, much less use either the Mac of PC built in low-vision aids. I can live with most of the changes, but not this one. Handicapped accessibility is a must.

I agree, the width should be moved to the short list of improvements. All the blank white space is burning out the phosphors of my Jumbotron

It is, admittedly, less forum-like than before. But try going into
your account page in the site and changing the Page Width setting.
Increasing the number of posts per page might also be worth a try.

Have you considered reading the forum in RSS form? If you prefer to
read 99% of the time and only post rarely, this can be a very
convenient and efficient way to go.

Alternatively, if you’re more into taking part, how about doing this
by email? Set up a set of filters/rules in your email client to put
Freewaytalk posts into the right mailboxes, then sit back, let the
posts come to you, and ping back comments or questions as regular
email. I tell you, it is the future!

Anyway - I’m sorry you’re not keen on the new look. Do try the
various options to see if you can make it feel better.

Sorry, you are going to have to put some more effort into your comment. Hate is both a very loaded word and completely useless to anyone who would hope to help you.

Take a breath or two, and then spell out exactly what you miss about the old format. Chances are very good that what you are looking for is here, but not where you used to find it.

I’ve been away from the Forum for a bit of time and when I came back I didn’t know what had happened. I searched again and then realized that the Forum I found so useful had disappeared and was replaced with this odd thing.

If you need input as to what I find wrong with this Forum, read all the posts above mine. 60 replies! That’s an astounding number of replies for any forum. Sorry for all your hard work but sometimes hard work doesn’t necessarily result in a positive outcome.

I want to be part of the Freeway community that helps each other find solutions to web building with this great piece of software. I don’t want to have to take forum tutorials to learn how to find help.

Put it back the way it was and I can get on with MY hard work.

If you want to see an example of what I think is the best forum format out there, have a look at this:

I think if you read the thread above, you will find that many of them are from me, and are in the nature of debugging the software as we made the transition.

Yes, there was an enormous amount of griping from people who just don’t like change. Yes, there were some actual problems THAT GOT SOLVED during the transition. If you actually read through this thread, and a few others from the same time frame, you will find that there were some constructive points made, and in most cases, those requests were honored. The site has been changed dramatically since it was launched. Absolutely everything that has been suggested has been considered, and much of it has been implemented.

Finally, I’m sorry but I have to ask: the site you post as an exemplar, is that a joke, or are you serious? Could you please list three things that you really like about it?

Thanks for your input,

Walter

for the record, walter has been quite responsive and I’ve played with my forum settings enough that what i see is pretty close to the old forum. not the same, and not as comfortably familiar, but darn close nonetheless. thanks, walter.
