Occupy Flash

A bit of fun, but a serious idea.

Do you agree it’s time for Flash to die?

I certainly feel it’s time that it started to be scaled back. Pretty much most of the Flash I am likely to encounter is advertising - these seem to carry video or animations that obscure the page’s content. With this in mind, I have Click to Flash installed in Safari. So only those sites that I want to see Flash on gets to play (basically the BBC web site and YouTube).

I am seeing less and less benefit to Flash every day now. The sooner YouTube and the BBC start using HTML5 the better. YouTube is beta testing it. The BBC too ages to move from RealPlayer to Flash, so I’m guessing no Flash ejection for a long while (the iPlayer uses Flash for DRM purposes, I understand).

I am also seeing a disturbing trend where adverts are presented in a modal/floating DIV style window, with a Flash animation inside. The only way to clear this kind of abomination is to let the Flash movie load and click on the Close button it provides.

I don’t have Flash installed on my MacBook Pro. However, I do have it in a couple of browsers (Chrome, OmniWeb) because so many sites I visit still use Flash. They are mostly sites for music and musicians. I guess a lot of musicians (or their web developers) saw Flash as the easiest way for their site visitors to play their music, perhaps without letting people download the tracks. Also, a lot of the sites that are made for musicians use it too, such as MySpace, SoundCloud, ReverbNation, and others. These have been gradually moving away from Flash, especially for mobile devices.

I hope it goes away soon, but I don’t know what StrongBad will do when it does.
