Odd question - how to make a custom font reference

I know the issues of web-safe fonts, but I have a particular reason
for wanting to build a specific page using a non-web-safe font. This
will be for use as a print template for a specific set of people, and
it will degrade to web-safe fonts for all others.

The trouble is the font I want to use doesn’t have the simplest of names:

Univers LT Std 57 Condensed

I can make a font set that works referencing “Univers LT Std”, but is
it possible to then specify the particular face within the overall
font family? I don’t want the default, 55 Roman, which is what I get

  • I want the condensed design of that weight.

If you know for a fact that all computers that will be printing this
have that exact face installed and active then you should be able
to specify it as your font. In an IT-managed setting, you can probably
rely on the machines having the same font control scheme and fonts
installed. But this is very fragile.

I have also seen that Safari will ignore a specific face – even when
provided first in the cascade of faces – and move on to some more
generic alternate, while Firefox will do exactly as told. So if you
can further restrict who gets to print from this set of pages to those
that use Firefox, you may be able to get precisely what you want.
