odd question

A client has mentioned http://www.weebly.com/ and says they can just create a free website on there, so why come to me. Can anyone give me some answers! Is this the future and should we be worried about services like this? Many thanks.

no doubt there will be other more highly skilled designers who will add their comments. My thought is does your client really want the their clients/customers to see that they have a free website - what does it say about their business and their service? They cannot get the flexibility of a site custom made (bespoke) from scratch with many different options from you including the ability to edit.

Services such as these may (and can) be viable alternatives if they offer everything the client needs but not everyone has such basic site requirements. I’ve never had a client ask me such a question because the people who approach me are looking for a personalized experience and value what I know and can do vs. a point-n-click-do-it-yourself solution. If a client can’t see or appreciate what you can bring to the table then my guess is that the bottom line is more important to them than craftsmanship. And that’s fine if that’s where they’re at.

I’m sure more and more people will use these “free” services to drag and
drop and build…but you get what you pay for in the end. Just because I
give you all the tools you need to build a house doesn’t mean it’s gonna be
pretty or function very well. I’ve fought this customer mind-set for 15
years. The advent of Microsoft Publisher gave every office assistant in the
land the power to do crappy graphics so their bosses didn’t have to pay a
designer. The age of mediocrity, or worse, is upon us. :frowning:

A few years back I was making really decent money as a graphic designer, but then desktop graphics became “the thing” and suddenly Sally Secretary could “create” brochures and all the printed materials a company might want. As long a person either didn’t recognize the difference between quality graphics and Sally’s work, OR just wanted to keep costs down, I found there was no way to persuade them otherwise. :frowning:

Thats what I am finding -

not just weebly but Wix also… you can have a free site - but to host it with your personalized domain… there is a cost from $16 + up… you can not have a wix site on your server / host
(ps I have seen the mobile vs of them - I don’t like them… )
