I unplugged my SCSI Heidelburgh Linotype Hell scanner, after switching off my G4 (Latest Tiger) and now it won’t start up. It doesn’t go past the grey startup screen with the Apple logo and the ‘radar’ ring. I have tried plugging it back in with its daisy chained Zip drive that acted as the terminator, but no joy. I’ve also held down the Option key to show an attached firewire external drive that is a complete backup of my Mac but it won’t boot from that either. They both show as MacintoshHD are selectable but neither works, which suggests that the fault definitely lies with the G4.
This reminds me of the good old OS9 days.
Can you try opening the case and removing the SCSI card altogether?
That would be a good debugging step to try. I just finally upgraded
from my wonderful old Agfa to a new Epson FireWire scanner, and have
been amazed at the reduction in weirdness after removing the SCSI
card. It’s really a dead format, I’m afraid.

You’re a life saver Walt. It worked. I can’t believe once unplugged, you can’t plug it back in. You’re right about SCSI of course, but the Saphir Ultra 2 was such a quality scanner and cost a fair bit too.
I’d have got round to your solution as a matter of desparation, but thanks for your timely help.
