I am using 350MHz PowerPC G4 with 768 MB SDRAM
OS X 10.4.11
When I try to open MacDrawPro Files the system freezes.
The same results when I try to import.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated as I have ten years of experience with MDP and I would like to preserve those files and continue using them through Intaglio
I’m fairly new to Intaglio so it may take one of the real users on this forum to help you. I can only suggest what I’ve used in the past and some I haven’t, such as Apple works (I don’t know if that will open the files either but try it). Even if you get an old copy of Clarisdraw you can’t upgrade your OS X system past version 4.11 as you’ll need System 9. If you are not retired check with you IT guy at work (if you use Macs) for an old copy of Clarisdraw. Or try to find a copy on ebay
Intaglio (v2.9.8, OS 10.4.11) opened a MacDraw Pro v1 test file. Drawn paths, colours and text translated correctly and objects were editable. MDP patterns look like vector objects, but in Intaglio they were bitmapped. If you’re using a similar setup, go to Intaglio Preferences and tick the ‘Convert Vector Pictures for editing during import’ button.
If your pictures were made in a later version of MDP, in Preferences, try unchecking ‘Convert patterns to solid colors’. I don’t have v1.5, but the later version’s features (tranparency or complex patterns, perhaps) could be causing the crashes.
I tried the Intaglio 3.0.2 demo and MDP files opened and could be edited. If you receive an out of memory error, copy, quit MDP and then paste). MDP files can also be copied and pasted into ClarisWorks and edited.
768mb?! Yes that could very well be a contributing factor. LOL!
Mac OS X needs at least 500mb of RAM to run correctly. Only OS9 and
below could use less.
Baron, you should update your PC to the highest amount of RAM that the
machine will take (as a rule of thumb). You will probably also find
that your machine will run much faster too.

Tom

As well as the out of memory errors, I’m also getting an error about colours.
I don’t know for sure, but MDP might be a 256-colour application. I reduced the number of colours in OSX Preferences to 256 and MDP opened the sample files without the error.
You could try using another program as an interchange. The simplest way is probably to paste the MDP document into the OS 9 Scrapbook. The image can then be dragged from there into Intaglio.
Another possibility is to print a Postscript disk file. Intaglio converts the ps file and the individual objects can be edited.
Would those of you who can can open and edit MacDraw Pro files let me know what your System Profile is so that I can target any upgrades to my system.
I make drawings with MacDrawPro 1.5v1 under Classic environment in OSX 10.4.11. They can be opened and
edited with Intaglio 3.0.1 under OSX 10.4.11.
My hardware is PowerbookG4 (1.25GHz, 1.25GB RAM).
Transferred my MacDraw Pro files from a rather cramped 10 Gb disc to another disc with much more free space and what do you know - I can open and edit in Intaglio without any complaints. However there is one point that I sure you are all aware of - the file size quadrupled from 68Mg to 268Mg
Thanks for staying with me now I have to learn the capabilities and limitations of Intaglio.
I purchased Intaglio 2.6.2 a couple of years ago, but had not used it regularly until I had to abandon MacDraw Pro 1.5.1 with my new computer not running OS9. I have a couple of questions:
How do I import MacDraw Pro files into Intaglio (very important question for me, I have a huge library of drawings done in MacDraw Pro). My attempts to either import or open MDP files show a grayed out icon and I can’t get it.
I have had a number of program crashes while trying to use Intaglio. One was when an object being edited (the rotate window was open) was deleted before closing the rotate window.
Editing windows (like the rotate window) display (?) behind the main drawing window no matter where I place it on the screen. I always have to move the main drawing window to find the edit window. This was the cause of many crashes when I deleted the object, not knowing that the edit window was still open.
How do I update to the current version of Intaglio?
Clif
Can only speak for Intaglio 3.1.1 and OS X 10.6.6, but with this combination, all I do to open an old MacDraw Pro file is the usual Command-O. Can also open from within the file–clicking on it opens it in Intaglio.
