Optimum page width?

Old question I know and there have been threads here before, but what is the favoured page width these days? This thread here http://www.freewaytalk.net/thread/view/17201#m_17201 was posted in Nov 2007, but presumably larger monitors have become more prevalent since that time.

Let’s take a look at that Swingometer…(with apologies to non UK residents)

Recent info reckons that 6% or less users have a screen res of 1024 or less. So with extra bits for scroll bars etc I am using 960px

Right David - so what is the most used monitor size - 17" ? Obviously this would depend on the target audience I suppose.

Actual monitor size is not really relevant. Resolution is the most important thing.

I find myself using 980px centred designs, mostly…kind of fits most needs. I hardly ever see any 800px monitors these days, except for one client who still likes THE CAT SAT ON THE MAT type lettering…and insists on running his 20" monitor at 800x600!

Thanks guys. A 20" at 800 x 600 must look like a Spectrum of old.

My wife is an eye doctor, and quite a few of her patients need their
text even larger than that. Try reading something while holding one
hand 6" in front of your face, forcing yourself to only use your
peripheral vision. That’s what Macular Degeneration looks and acts
like, except the hole in your vision is dead black and doesn’t go away
when you put your hand down.

Walt, that must be ghastly. Makes me happier about my tinnitus.

One of our dear family friends has it quite bad. She’s entirely blind
in one eye, and “wave hands” in the other. It’s one of those things
that if it’s caught in time, there are loads of treatments that can
halt or even reverse the damage. While the disease is in its “wet”
stage, doctors can use laser or medicine to stop the growth of the
leaky blood vessels on the retina, and either contain the damage or
give the eye a chance to heal. But once it progresses to the “dry”
stage, there’s nothing but dead retina to work with.

When Beverly first noticed her vision going, she was on vacation in
The Netherlands. By the time she got back to the states, the damage
was done. She has helped pioneer some new treatments, including the
direct injection of anti-cancer drugs into the eyeball (Lucentis), but
for her, it was a case of the state of the art not being there when
she needed it. If this had happened to her this year, she might still
be seeing well in both eyes – that’s how fast doctors are learning
new ways to combat the illness.

The changes that happen to your eye in this disease are obvious to an
eye doctor long before you notice any differences in your vision.
Annual eye exams (WITH the drops that make your pupils look like
saucers) not only put bread on my table, they also can save your vision!

Another tinnitus sufferer?..well, well. Are you persistent or occasional?

Walt, just had my yearly reminder, which I binned, but I’ve changed my mind now and will book my appointment. Thanks for the heads up. Not a very pleasant condition or treatment by the sound of it.

Hugh - persistent I’m afraid. Bit like coming out of a very loud music gig into a very quiet environment, a permanent ringing. I try to ignore it, but peace and quiet have gone. Shame really as I live in the country.

Yes, ditto, persistent too. Sometimes it’s irksome, sometimes you don’t notice it so much. Now you’ve made me notice it more…

I think I’ll check in for the eyes, too!

Anyone else got any complaints? Come on don’t be shy. If it’s serious at least let us know what Mac bits you might have going spare…

Ah yes, youth’s a wonderful thing, a shame it’s wasted on the young.

As someone who has had said laser treatment to halt leaky blood vessels (brought on through diabetes) I can only stress how IMPORTANT it is to get your peepers regularly checked.

That is one of the reasons I have my Safari preference set to Zoom Text Only so I can bump up just the text size when I am feeling the need.

Also probably why I notice FW layouts breaking up more under those conditions.

I had a spell about a year ago when I had a bad time and was quite worried that I was going to lose the sight in one eye (the good one) - fortunately all OK now but I have to make sure that I go for every check up going!

And another persistent tinnitus sufferer.

It’s all Slade’s fault. I went to see them in about 1980 at Newcastle
Polytechnic in their comeback years and spent most of the night
completely plastered sitting in a HUGE bass bin.
Had such an effect on me I now play the bass guitar!.
