Page Design Size

I thought I’d ask this in off-topic as it probably applies to all web page design…

But I was thinking, what with all the ‘widescreen’ monitors and widescreen laptops about nowadays, plus the ridiculous amount of vertical pixel space taken up by some windows version browsers (with added Google toolbars to boot)… what page size do you tend to design at in Freeway?

I know there won’t be any hard and fast rule, designs will still often be unique and bespoke. But, things just seem to get wider and shorter in the visual world! How does this impact on your Freeway approach?

Any views?

Hugh

I’m stubbornly trying to stick to 800x600 as the window size, with assuming IE6 taking up part of that. But with Safari 3’s default window width having grown to 1024, I am looking at how sites appear in it.

OTOH, I have an iPod touch (same screen as iPhone) and I try to make sure sites are viewable and useable on that too.

Hugh,

I would start of with page width, and 780px wide seems to fit the bill to allow small screens (plus a scroll bar). But depth, that’s a decision you’ve got the make. Without doubt the first 300-500px will be the most noticeable so any important information needs to be there.

The latest web 2.0 trend does not seem to worry about depth to much, relying on big bold graphics, and big fonts. Unlike how it used to be, trying to get everything into view at the sacrifice of using smaller fonts.

The real secret is knowing your customers - and who are you trying to appeal to. If I look at my latest Google Analytic stats 1024x768 it taking 38% of the viewer browser screen size
