Ahh- but then another button lights up which says “please do not press
this button again”!

Okay, I admit it, I’m a nerd!

If you’re dissatisfied with Intaglio, hop over to the Lineform forum and read the comments. ‘Scathing Criticisms’ would be a better description.
Then go to the Adobe Illustrator forum and note how many ‘Out of Memory Problems’, ‘Can’t upgrade’ and ‘Unknown Error’ type of questions there are.

Intaglio isn’t perfect, but it does most of the things that most people will want to do. You’ve just got to work out how to use the tools. There’s an awful lot of power hidden away in features such as the Group Masking palette, the Patterns palette and the Library.
I’ve learned a lot from reading the contributions to the AI forum. Many AI effects are all-but impossible in Intaglio, but Intaglio is much easier to use.

I recently discovered that vector graphics created in Expression can be pasted into Intaglio and edited. In Expression, drawn vector shapes can be twisted, distorted and given perspective. Its Strokes menu is extremely powerful and the vector objects it creates are less taxing on the computer than bitmaps. Expression isn’t—how can I word this politely—particularly intuitive, but it does things that in Intaglio you can only get from the CI effects in the Effects menu. The bitmap-based CI effects slow my G5 iMac to a crawl and have caused many crashes. Rather than struggle with CI effects, I find it easier to create the effect in Expression, paste into Intagio and change the colours etc there. If people are interested in creating artistic effects—rather than engineering drawing/architecture—Expression is worth a try.
Expression can probably still be downloaded, for free, from Microsoft, but beware! Until you’ve got into its individual ways, it’s a pain to use. Can’t complain about the price however.

Overall, I still prefer Intaglio, warts and all. I would like it to have warping/envelope effects like in ArtText and Expression, but the hard questions are ‘how big do users want the program to be’, how complex and ‘how much do users want to pay’? I think Nick discussed these considerations in the podcast.

I don’t think anyone are moaning about Intaglio. I LOVE Intaglio!
However I just find that Nick gives very little away when it comes to
what he is doing to further improve Intaglio, and pointers to any new
features to come using new technologies in Leopard and S. Leopard.
"Out of memory"and strange recurring error pop-ups also occur in
Intaglio, so we’re not immune.

I’m very surprised that you are also championing Expression from
Microsoft. Personally I would rather saw my right leg off than use
Microsoft-ware!
