hi, have been doing some optimisation on our site www.batchelor-electrical.co.uk and although we score for long-tail keywords on phrase we cannot seem to rank high on is “electrical contractors” in Google.
Keyword density and count, h1 tags, page titles etc and backlinks are all good, if not beetter than competition.
Upon investiagting in SEO Tools spider test our page size is 37038 which is 2 or 3 times that of those in top 10 - do you think this could effect SERPs??? This seems to be only pattern…
Do you have any inward links to your site? Ideally with the link
created from the words “electrical contractors” or links to a
“electrical contractors” page to weight the search to a specific page?
You could then link from the home page to this page with a text link
“electrical contractors”.
One other think to consider also is, "electrical contractors
???" many might not put those two words alone, but add a third
word to shorten the search results like “electrical contractors
GEOGRAPHIC AREA” or “electrical contractors SPECIALIST AREA”
It can always be spoilt by some putting in “electrical contractoR”

David thanks. Yes, I’ve got some good inward links which are linked in with keyword electrical contractors. I have also recently added htaccess file to get over canonical non-www url issue and possible duplicate content.
Curently in Google we are No.1 for a lot of phrases ‘electrical contractor retail’ ‘electrical contractor shopfitting’ etc as you suggested but just cannot seem to be listed in top 100 for ‘electrical contractor’ despite, I believe, the site to be better optimised and with relevenat fresh content.
Right at top in MSN for ‘electrical contractors’ and on second page in Yahoo. Do these upate SERPs quicker - maybe this is it???
