Password protected

Hi guys,

I found this the other day and thought I’d share it with you:

http://tools.dynamicdrive.com/password/

It’s a tool for making a password protected area on your site with the
ability to add and remove usernames and passwords. I haven’t tried it
out yet (due to time restraints) but if anyone gets it working please
share your experience of it with us.

This looks quite geeky to get set up, but then very nice in terms of
allowing you to make changes in a rapid-fire manner. This would be
very useful for someone whose ISP/hosting provider didn’t offer a
similar Web control panel for controlling access to protected folders.

Yep we have such a feature to control pass-worded folders in the clients web control panel.

If anyone is interested, and for for a bigger solution to control lots of users, we have a script “Locked Area Lite” a password protection and membership management system. The webmaster controls this from a simple web interface, and the users get notification of their passwords etc. Very easy to install - just one click.

Thanks for sharing this Joe. I saw this, or something very much like it, ages
ago and even tried to convert the functionality into an action (I’ll create an
action from anything!) until I found that the actions API can’t handle files
that start with a period (.htaccess for example). At that point I converted the
action to work in PHP which also got the job done.
Protecting files and folders in the application UI (with .htaccess voodoo
happening behind the scenes) would be my #1 suggestion.
Regards,
Tim.
