Password retrieval from Freeway

I have an old site that I need to edit. The upload info in Freeway all works, but I need access to the site folder with Transmit. The client can’t remember the password. The provider support isn’t responding.

Is there any way to ‘see’ the password in Freeway? From memory it’s a useful option in Dreamweaver.

Thanks in advance.

Is this on your machine? If so, the Keychain application has the
ability to show passwords. Also, have you tried copying the *******
out of Freeway and pasting it into Transmit?

Thanks Paul.

I had tried Keychain but it only appears to save passwords from Safari and Transmit. Copy and paste doesn’t work.
Very frustrating.

Hi Ade,

As far as I know the password is permanently masked in Freeway. You
would need to contact your clients webhost in order to retrieve it.

I would be rather alarmed if it did; that’s never supposed to work in
any proper password text field. Paste IN, yes - but copy out, never.

The password will be stored within the document’s data structure -
BUT it will be encrypted and not accessible except to Freeway itself.
In theory you could sniff network packet data while making an upload;
regular FTP connections and transmissions are made in plain text, so
the password would be sent that way too. In practise this is a
somewhat challenging task[*], even from the same computer that’s
making the upload. I remember doing something like this a few years
ago using Terminal, but I can’t remember the process in any detail.

Thanks guys. The problem’s not insurmountable and (eventually) the provider will reset the password for us.

Thanks again.

Look a bit deeper in the Keychain application; I’ve found it contains
ALL my passwords, for everything I ever made one for. You might have
to look in the various ‘sections’.

I’m sure Freeway does not save passwords in Keychain, otherwise there
would be an option (check box) to do so.

Just wondered if you had had any luck with this one as I find myself in the same situation as Ade and the provider is not too efficient at dealing with things. Its not a provider of my choice suffice to say.

Personally I would recommend you ask the host to change the password for you and ideally move you over to a secure FTP connection. FTP passwords are sent in the plain and can be intercepted and extracted from the general flow of network traffic should anyone want to look hard enough.

As an example I downloaded a free ‘packet sniffing’ application called Packet Peeper (Download PacketPeeper_17_08_2008.dmg (Packet Peeper)) and set Freeway to upload my site. The application captures all of the traffic data that passes via my machine and in there, buried in a mass of information, is the plain text for the username and password.
For example;
http://www.freewayactions.com/test/sniff-ftp-password.jpg (The red block shows where the password was displayed).

If you really cannot reset your password any other way then using a tool like this may unearth your FTP details.
Regards,
Tim.
