pc laptop

Given that this is a freeway forum and we are all discerning types*. Can anyone recommend a ‘very very cheap’ pc laptop ? Yes it sticks in my throat as well but would like it for two principal reasons 1). to test web pages 2). backup digi pic files. killing two birds with one stone.
Would be happy just with a manufacturer recommendation, dell, acer, etc.

thanks,

seoras

  • hopefully not so discerning that you wouldn’t buy a pc

I suppose this is assuming you don’t have an Intel-based Mac and thus Parallels and VM Ware are not options for you?

Hi Joe,

Sadly no and I recently splashed out on an Olympus E3 so funds are a tad low.

Hi,

Dell seems to be consistently at the top of the PC list and Sony has some nice products. If it were me that’s where I would start.

Again I would suggest Dell - and I am told that the best time to buy a Dell online is close to the end of the month when targets have to be met. Generally upspecced for the same money.

Not that it would be me - I have been given an Acer 1.66 running Vista home basic and I can’t believe how bad/slow it is. But maybe that is just the Acer?

Thanks guys,

Dell certainly seems to be getting the thumbs up.

There was a fairly long-running ad campaign for Dell here in the US
that featured this young proto-slacker whose catch-phrase was “Dude,
you’re getting a Dell”, which was delivered in this Beavis and Butt-
head voice. I used to mimic him and say, “Dude, you’re going to hell!”

Hi,

Just to say I ended up with an HP compaq 6715s - 160Gb hard drive, AMD Turion processor, windows XP etc. £350 after £50 cash back though HP are being a bit stroppy about that.
Its a bit plasticky but works fine, very quiet and seems to run cool, with an ok screen, certainly will do for my needs. Thankfully I’ve discovered how to turn off the intensely irritating login sound and downloaded Safari so I can pretend I’m on a mac while surfing.

hey ho,
