plug in / view source

Good Morning,

I am still learning what to look for in “view source” to see what plug ins / programs some sites use on their sites.

I am working on a mock for a car dealership was wondering what program / plug in

that this website is using to display the cars on front and on the back pages…

http://www.raylakshonda.com

and if you click on - used cars - that program too. I cant pull a direct link - the URL still shows the main page URL.

Thank you,

Julie

PS,

I think the front - looking at the main Honda page http://automobiles.honda.com/
is the main honda page put in a box.

is there a way to do that?

But, I also need what that “used” car program is. How do I see that in view source?

Thank you so much

Julie

That is an iFrame showing the Honda Website which has been created in Flash.

The ‘pre-owned’ page is also using an iFrame to show another site (http://www.autofind.com) - the other site in this case is created using a database to pull the car information.

If you right-click on the honda image you can see that it is flash.
The browser-style scroll bars gives the iFrame away - also, if you view the source and ‘Cmd-Find’ and enter ‘iframe’ you will see the code for the iFrame.

There is an action here for an iFrame that you can insert into your page:

I have one more question…

I did the iframe of the front and the used .

The used looks differentbut it looks different - maybe theirs is a specific - dealer login look? Or can I do something to "crop the top of the website?

You cannot crop the top I’m afraid as the iFrame will display the full url contents.

Try this url: http://www.raylakshonda.com/UsedCars.html

An iframe is just like a new browser window welded into the middle of
the page. You can only control its contents by changing the source
page. If you don’t have control over that source page, then you need
to either try a different technique, or find a different source for
the content to put into your iframe.

Another technique is to use a “screen scraper” script to get the
remote page, strip it down to just the part you want, and then insert
it into your page. This gives you maximal control, because you can
substantially alter the original content, apply your own styling, etc.
All things that you cannot do with the “through the looking-glass”
approach of an iframe. This is SIGNIFICANTLY harder to pull off, and
it becomes a “brittle” solution, because the remote site can and will
redesign their site, which will definitely force you to re-jig your
content filter to match. I use this technique to do XHTML validations
against the W3 validator, and ePub validations against Three Rivers.
I’ve had to update the W3 scraper twice to deal with changes at their
end.

Oh, one other thing to look into – does your dealership offer an RSS
feed of cars for sale? I would not be surprised if they did. If so,
you can use my ReadFeed Action and a fair amount of hand-written CSS
to style the resulting linked list into something quite magical – an
automatically updating element on your page, perhaps with pictures,
but definitely with name and description and links to purchase or get
more information.

Thank you Nathan and Walter,

That makes sense.
for a mock I don’t think it would be worth the efforts… especially since they might have a dealer page that they are using in an iframe which does not have the top etc…

THey do not - I do not see one on the site at all.

I would think it would be by the facebook and social media symbols.

Interesting concept… I like that - something to offer them.

It would be signalled by the RSS button in the right end of your
Safari location field, or similar icons appearing in Firefox’s chrome.
The “social media” buttons are completely orthogonal to RSS or ATOM.
If the designer chooses to lump them together visually, that’s
completely up to them, but they have almost nothing at all to do with
one another at a technical level.

If you “use the source, Luke”, then you would see a line of code like
this:

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="RSS" href="http://freewaytalk.net/rss/actions_dev.xml
" />

somewhere up in the HEAD of the page. That sets up the auto-discovery
method for RSS. A link to the RSS file itself, attached to one of
those little orange radio wave buttons, is a secondary way to
advertise the format to visitors.
