Prevent bookmarking

I am in the process of setting up a website selling mp3 downloads and I am using Mals and linklok (thanks to a lot of help on these forums)

Separately to this, the site is offering a ‘freebie’ download in exchange for a bit of information. Customer fills in a form and gets directed to the download page where they can get the file.

At this stage of course they can bookmark the page and send it to anyone so they can bypass the form stage.

We have looked at including it as a FOC product in the cart system but there are several reasons why we don’t want to do this. So, can I prevent the download page from being bookmarked by unscrupulous scoundrels

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Mark

No - not really. If you can visit it you can Bookmark it. In much the same way you cannot truly protect any image you put on the Web from being stolen.

If you dont want it downloaded then dont put it up there.

You could probably protect the page so that it could only be accessed from the correct referrer ie the form submission page.

This is a pretty easy trick. I would do this with two stages. First, your PHP Feedback Form page to gather the info you want in exchange for the free goodies, then on your Success page, you would add the Timed Redirect Action, set to a short fuse, set to redirect to the file. In an .htaccess file in the same folder as the file you are letting them download, add these lines:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www.)?mydomain.com/.*$ [NC]
RewriteRule .(pdf|doc|txt|zip)$ - [F]

Change the mydomain.com part to match your domain, and the pdf|doc|txt|zip part to match whatever file type(s) you want to protect. Now, they can try to bookmark the page, but they’ll have to be very quick about it. You’re not making it impossible, just very improbably that they will be able to pass along the address to the file, and the address to the actual file they downloaded will be impossible to access directly.

Thanks for that Walter. As a matter of interest; would the redirect show in the browser history?

Yes, but once you start worrying about that, you’re well out of the realm of this solution. I was trying to give you a cheap-and-cheerful way to solve this with the tools at hand.

If you really want to lock up your downloads, you will want to look for (or write, or hire me to write) a proper solution with an integrated database. This problem is similar to several others I have solved, one of which was the previous Softpress Shop, where purchased copies of Freeway could be downloaded within a specific time window, and only by the person who made the purchase.

It’s not a major issue. Your solution will be great for this and I have started on implementing it.

Again many many thanks for your help.
