For years, I’ve carried a physical portfolio of photos of the work I do
to show to prospective clients. It occurred to me that it would be
possible to access an online portfolio during these meetings instead of
the physical portfolio. With that idea in mind, I set up a password
protected folder on my website hosted by Bluehost using their cPanel.
The portfolio page is placed in the folder, and the username/password
requirement works well. The problem is that after closing the page
(browser window), I can immediately return to the portfolio page
without having to re-enter the user/password. Only by quitting the
browser can I reset the password requirement (deleting cache, cookies,
history has no effect). So, it all boils down to 2 questions:
Is there a way to have the password be required after closing the
window – maybe some sort of Log Out button that I could press (however
that could be created)?
The portfolio page is for my own private use – I wouldn’t want it
to end up as a link on the Internet (I’ve already included the
robots.text thing). Maybe there’s another approach to this other than
the password protected page idea. Any suggestions?
Thank you in advance! (It’s been awhile since I’ve been on the list)
An htaccess password such as the kind you set up with cPanel will survive one “session”. In a PC, the session collapses when you close the window. On a Mac, the session collapses when you quit the browser. There are other means of password-protecting a page/folder, but nothing as simple and fool-proof as the htaccess method. If you want to ensure that nobody can return to your private page after you leave, just quit the browser you used.

Thanks Walter – that was fast! I’ll stick with my current arrangement since it will work well on a PC computer.
