Have a client whose site currently comes up in the browsers with or without the www included in the domain. He got some advice from someone who said he needs to add a 301 redirect for SEO purposes. Is this really necessary? If so, how is this done? Please advise. Thank you.

Yes you will need a ‘Permanent 301 redirect’ so that search engines don’t penalise you thinking you have duplicate content. I know from experience that this does happen.
You do this from your sites hosting account control panel contact your host if you need help with it.
