[Pro] A look at my site

If anyone has the time or inclination, I’d appreciate a look at the site I’m developing in FWPro. I’m a rank beginner not only with FW but with site development, too.

The design thus far is quite Spartan, a concept we like, but not necessarily the execution yet. On the first three pages you’ll see pictures in the the left margin. These are not necessarily the ones we’ll use, but the idea is to have pictures related to the text in that spot. They have a shadow but I don’t know if that’s the best way to show them off.

In general, any comments and suggestions at this early stage of development would be extremely welcome before the site gets big and there’s 10 times as much to redo.

The site is at:

Many thanks in advance.

It’s sparse, but that’s OK. You have room to add more content if the client wants.

The only thing is I might take the FB icon and move it to the top right of the navigation bar. Where it is now is pretty out of the way and it doesn’t flow with the rest of the text on the page. Is it in a layered box bu itself?

More knowledgeable folks will chime in, I’m sure!

Hi Martin,
I think it looks pretty dang good.
Two things stood out.

  1. The layers of the site look great when they are not zoomed by a browser…but open the page in Safari and do a zoom text only, and you will see that the layers start to over lap. I don’t think you need two separate html items, one for the “welcome & mission” and one for the text below.
Why not just have one large html area and with the welcome header and the large block of text below. This would keep the text from overlapping when zoomed. The same overlapping issue happens to the faceobok icon.
Rather than having it as a floating layer, place it inside of the text box, by clicking inside of the html area, then click Insert->Graphic Item, select float to left and import the facebook icon. This will allow the text to wrap around the graphic if zoomed.

  2. The second thing, and this is just ascetics, is the green text logo looks a bit flat to me…I did something a little different with it… http://frontrangeweb.com/grass-patch.html

I noted the text font type and sizes if you are inclined to change it.

Over all I think it looks very nice, especially for your first go.

Good advice. Martin, as well as what Rich has said, you could give the box containing the text a green 1 pixel border down the left side only, and it would then go from top to bottom and expand automatically downwards with the box is someone enlarges the text in the browser. A kind of expanding border, looking much like what you have there now.

Robert, Rich and Paul:

Thanks so much for taking the time to look at the site and for the great suggestions. I really like all of them and have already incorporated some of them. Rich, I love the logo you put together and so do my friends I’m putting the site together for. I was wondering where I can get Trajan Pro, it’s not on my Mac? Also, when I was trying to follow your instructions for putting the Facebook logo in a graphic box within the html box, I wasn’t able to follow them exactly. What I mean is when you referred to the float. (I did put the logo into the html box and it doesn’t break.) I discovered that there seems to be a difference between the Inspector for an html item in the FWPro 5.5 software and the description of it in the FW 5 Reference manual.

I put a couple of screen shots at:

Again, thank you all very much. All other suggestions and criticism is more than welcome.

Not sure where I found Trajan, probably mr. google will find it for you…The facebook icon looks better at the top.

If you wanted to have a picture within your large block of text set to the right side, and have the text wrap around it…you would insert your cursor into the html text box. At the top if you want the pic at the top, somewhere in the middle if you want it in the middle etc.
Then click Insert ->graphic item a small graphic box should show up justified left. Resize the graphic to your liking, import the graphic and then if you want it set to the right, click align right and the graphic box should slide to the right side of the html box.

Search this site…“text wrapping around a graphic item”…for more coherent details.
