[Pro] Akismet and SPAM?

I’m getting a LOT of human SPAM from China on a Perch enabled website. Perch recommends Akismet, but before I invest the time and money I wanted to find out if anyone is using Akismet and if it’s been effective against human SPAM.

I haven’t used it myself but I’ve heard/read numerous times that it’s pretty much the Gold Standard.

I’ve used Spamsieve now for several years, integrated with Gyazmail (my email of choice) and Growl. Find it excellent.

Spamsieve for email and not web spam of course.

What volume of spam are you encountering on your Web page? I haven’t tried the Perch comment system, but doesn’t it offer a moderation workflow? Disqus certainly does. As long as you aren’t getting 100 messages an hour out of China and elsewhere, you may be able to keep up with moderating messages before they appear live. Just the prospect of having to pass moderation (spelled out in your comment form) may keep the more egregious of these offenders out.

It’s a low volume website. We’re only getting about 6-8 per day, which is just enough to be annoying. The Perch Blog is moderated, but the Forms, which is where we’re getting the SPAM, are not.

BTW, why is it that some sites get SPAMMED and others don’t?
