Now if you had tried it before you posted you would have saved yourself a post and us from wasting time reading it!

I have been going post crazy here lately

And that is exactly what FWT is for but we have to remember that it takes seconds to try stuff while you might not get an answer for ages.

It’s actually more complex that just doing a quicky test in Freeway and Previewing. Older versions of Internet Explorer get fiesty when you apply anchors to Graphics. In the past, I used to sketch an HTML box and put an anchor on transparent text inside so as to get the page to work as expected in IE.

All said, when you fiddle around with anchors, be sure to test in IE 8, not just version 9 or 10. IE8 is the newest version of IE that can be used on Windows XP. Whether or not you wish to support IE7 (or even 6) is up to you, but again you need to test your sites in those browsers to know if your links and anchors will work as you desire them to.

With equal respect, DeltaDave, good web design is defined by its diligent consideration of web diversity. I am not saying you lack that. I am only saying many new web designers don’t yet understand it fully, hence the need for explanation.

Web browsers are as diverse as the people whose them. Why then must we as web designers be bigoted toward two or three browsers that we ourselves like?

I may like Chrome on my Mac for personal use, but Google Analytics provokes me to consider the bulk of my web visitors, who I see are here in Japan and who primarily use IE 8 and IE 9. And yet, there are some of my visitors stuck in the past who still use IE 7 (and even IE 6). Now consider that a large percentage of my visitors are not merely end users but business users accessing my site to obtain information (PDF manuals, vehicle wiring database access, product videos, etc.) So in this case, what should I do?

Many web designers take the easy path and just ignore certain visitors. I agree that such is “easy.” Others go out of their way to support them with website hacks. And then there are others who, like myself, add a few hacks where possible (including putting anchors on text at times, instead of a more readily accessible existing graphic), and at the same time I add some browser sniffing code to my page to alert these ancient IE users that they need to upgrade their browser.

My entire point is that web design takes not only right-brained creative thought and left-brained programming thought, it also takes a little bit of both sides of the brain, as a businessman, to see how to address the diversity of browsers and to whom we NEED to cater, as opposed to whom we WANT to cater our web designs. Such was the motivation behind my other post in this thread.

Have a wonderful web design day!

James W.

hence the need for explanation

But there was no explanation required - Raven asked a simple question.

For me that was a simple answer.

Now if you’d like me to get verbose…
