[Pro] [ANN] Inlay CMS is ready for the world

After many months of waiting, my Inlay CMS service is ready for you to use.

http://inlay.io

Inlay is a Content Management System that is optimized for simplicity and specially designed to interact well with Freeway (and other static Web design techniques).

Unlike many other CMSen, Inlay does not require that you chop your page up into header/footer/sidebar/body “partials”, but rather works directly with your page as you designed it. The only additions needed to make it work are some HTML5 data-attributes decorating the elements you want to make editable. The Inlay server reads your page, converts it to a template, and sets up an editing interface for you. If you use the Action to mark your editable regions, there’s no coding needed at all.

Each template page you make may be used over and over (like a Master Page) to make as many individual pages as you need. Set up one for all product detail pages, then create as many duplicates as you have products. These “virtual pages” will be fulfilled by the Inlay server, while any regular static pages in the same site will be served by your server. From a browser, there is no way to tell the difference between the two pages – they both appear to come from your server, and the HTML is completely free of identifying tags or markup. There are no limits to the number of pages you may make with this system.

Inlay is a hosted service, and you pay for it monthly. There are plan levels for a single site, 10 sites, or unlimited sites.

All plans come with one or more “editor” accounts, which you may assign to your clients, business partners (or bridge partners), and give them editing privileges over a site. If you have a multi-site account, you may assign the same editor to multiple sites, or a different editor to each site. Your editors cannot see any site you have not assigned to them, so a pro with a lot of clients can pay once for an account, then re-sell the editing privilege to each client, who will only see “their” site(s).

I don’t have “white label” account features yet, but I do plan to make that available later. For now, the interface is clean, modern, and generic.

Please give it a try, and tell a friend, too!

I’m excited - best wishes on your launch man!

Instead of gold/silver/platinum plans can we have copper/nickel/iron? Or
maybe cobalt?

Seriously, can’t wait to try it out.

I can attest to it being dead simple to use in a non-Freeway workflow.

Well done on http://inlay.io Lookig forward to trying it out. Any way that it could be paid for yearly, as I don’t use a credit card only a UK debit card?

Keep up the good work

It’s done mostly with CSS, and a little JS to toggle a classname off and on. When the page loads, the sidebar is assigned the “shy” class, which makes it slide 190px left. When you mouse over the sidebar, the JS takes the shy class off of the bar, and the CSS makes it “ease” over to its starting point. When you mouse back out of the sidebar, it gets shy again and slides back in.

I will look into this, but you can pay monthly through a debit card as well — I don’t think there’s a restriction on what sort of card you use.

Walter, what sort of thing would this be suitable for? Would it work as a web-store, or blog etc.?

Hi Walter, I have been looking at an alternative to Pulse and this looks great. I have a couple of questions though if I may:

Can the editor name/status be changed once the site is up and running? I’m thinking this may be needed perhaps when I hand the site over once it’s fully live or when a member of staff leaves/changes.

With the gold package, 10 sites/5 editors, does this mean per site or one editor for every two sites?

Finally, how do the ‘virtual’ pages work in the murky world of SEO? If they are not visible on the server, does this mean they will not be findable by Google?

Many thanks

Mark

As the owner of a site, you are always able to edit your own sites. You can assign and “un-assign” additional editors at any time. If you delete an editor, you can invite another, up to the limit of your subscription level.

The Gold package allows you a total of 10 sites, and 5 editor accounts. You may assign all 5 to one site, or one to one site. The Platinum account simply removes all limits.

Virtual pages are completely “real” from the perspective of a browser, and thus Google can see them and index them just as they do any other page. The only case where the pages are not real is if you log into your server through SFTP and look for the pages. In that case, you will only see your templates.

The documentation http://docs.inlay.io is itself running in Inlay, sort of a “eating your own dog food” situation, and it helped me find a number of bugs. As far as a demo of the interface, I have to get on that – I plan to do a screencast walking through the whole process.

And at that point, I’m sure a lot more people will jump onboard. Well done Walter, and thanks.

Right now, there is no blog functionality as such, so I wouldn’t recommend it for that purpose. I do plan to add some of these features as time goes by. Right now, this would be an excellent system for a static site that had frequent changes to existing pages, or for a product site where you are adding and removing products. I found it pretty easy to use for the documentation site, too.

Future features (not promised, but under active exploration) include:

  • A widget to show a list of all pages (real and virtual) so you could construct navigation without having to hand-code all the links.
  • A drag-sort control of the list of pages, including drag this page into that folder.
  • A view of pages by date added (for blogs).
  • Static includes (for footers and such – copyright) that you can edit once and put into every page with a snippet.

I’m sure there are more to come as well. A lot of my decision to build this was to make something sustainable. So if it gets enough uptake, I can afford to spend more time on it and make it more valuable for everyone. Need to get over the initial hill-climb, which means promotion!

I was wondering what the experiences are from the early inlay users? I still have problems with the setup.

After install everything on my server I get an error on my site, after delete the inlay stuff the problem is solved and I can visit my site again.

No feedback sofar from inlay support

Thx for your feedback

There may have been an issue with the Support Form not sending - hopefully now sorted.

Try it again or send an email direct to Walter - you will get his email address from the people page at FWT.

Erik, please do give the support form another shot, if you haven’t already. Dave found a bug in it for me, and it’s been fixed. (I added that bug, ironically, while adding the ability for me to reply to support requests from anywhere through a secure form.)
