[Pro] any issues with changing file names

Hi, put up a website in haste and looking at the pages file names, they don’t make much sense. They are almost the same with only the last letter being different.
Question, is there any ramification in going back in and renaming the file names?
It will help me in knowing them, does this impact SEO in anyway?
Will Freeway replace the ‘page’ on the hosted server or will it treat the new name as a different page and upload it too?
I think from what I’ve seen so far, I’ll have to redo links.
Any other gotchas or reasons not to change the file names and leave them as Freeway named them?

Only for SEO - and if the site was recently created then not much SEO juice has been created yet.

Yes - FW keeps a track of all files for you.

If you have used the FW link picker then no you wont. If you have created absolute links using the External tab then you will.

You should always name your files in a SEO meaningful way ie about.html should be something like about-the-name-of-my-company.html

Interesting, I thought this file name had to be 16 characters. I’m gathering you use the - as no spaces are allowed . I could see how this would impact SEO. Thanks for all the great answers and feedback.

Absolutely not.

There is a setting in File>Document Setup under the Output Tab where you can choose your Default Max File Name length.

Correct but you can use underscores instead. However the hyphen is recognised better as a word separator.

For as far as I know you can change the max length for filenames up to 128 characters.

Again, all good information to know.
So as I understand it , use descriptive file and alt-text names, all lower case, and words separated by - dashes?

Richard, I just went in to Document Setup in Freeway Pro 7.1 and went I went to MaxFilenameLength a pop up says "Maximum length of filenames limited to 31 characters. So there are constraints.

Try opening the Document Setup (File menu > Document Setup…) and selecting the Output Tab… you can change the max filename length there. Mine is set to 64, which works well for my needs.

Cheers.
