[Pro] Append 2nd site to host

Hiya,

I may be being a bit naive here, but is there a way to append/upload a second full site to my host, so that I can view both. Hope that makes sense

thanks

There’s a couple of ways you could do this. One would be to simply put the second site in a folder within your site root folder, and then browse to it at www.yoursite.com/foldername

If you are testing a site that you made for a client, that’s a quick and easy way to do that, and you can delete that folder later and no harm done.

If you want this second site to be more permanent, another great way to do this is to use your hosting provider’s control panel to set up a subdomain, so it would be secondsite.yoursite.com. This is more permanent, but it allows you to test the site very nearly the same as it will be seen by visitors coming (later) to www.secondsite.com. When you do the subdomain route, you will need to see what your host requires from you in terms of file placement. Some hosts treat a subdomain as a completely new server, and so you will get a new Apache root folder separate from your existing root folder for www, and there you will upload your files for this new site. Other hosts have what’s called “wildcard” subdomains, where you simply create a folder inside your original web root (just as in the first example above) and then if you navigate to foldername.yourdomain.com, you see the content of that folder just as if it was a new subdomain. That last part is up to your hosting provider, so you’ll have to ask them what they support.

Hiya Walter,

Thanks very much! I will look into the subdomain as this sounds a better option.

Many thanks
