[Pro] Assigning and Listing Categories in a CMS

i hope i’m not being lazy here
but in my researching and trying out a couple of cms systems
i don’t see any way to create categories and then generate lists of categories and recent posts like in wordpress
i would like to do a blog but want the flexibility of freeway for design but the capability of wordpress to create categories and list posts
can i do this with some of the simpler cms systems (not like expression engine or anything)
is there a showcase of blogs people have done with freeway anywhere ?
thanks all
ian

I was just about to type it all on how to do this in ExpressionEngine. EE, is super easy to work with together in Freeway. The only set back however is cost and that’s understandable if money is an issue. There is a free Core version that you could at least entertain yourself with because I think once you got the hang of it you’d feel it was worth the money.

As far as other CMS options, I’ll try and save you some time. WebYep can’t do categories, Pulse CMS at least from the demo doesn’t look like you can do that, Joomla might be an option to take a look at and it has FW actions with it, CMSMadeSimple avoid all together even though it can do what you want, and that’s about all I can think of that could mix together with FW besides EE.

I’ve heard of MODx, but I haven’t jumped into it too far to see.

What systems have you tried so far?

Well - good point Ian.

It all depends on your expactation to a blog.

If it should be only “author-side”, will mean you`d like to share your opinions without any comments of your readers, you could do it with webyep and its loop function.

Either you style it within freeway (combination of imageaction + richtextaction in a specific design) or you just put a richtextelemnt and style it completly in an editor (tinyMCE or CKEditor).

Just add another loop and style again and so on. The loops can be sorted or deleted.

By adding reader comments, I thought about using for example http://disqus.com/ (or others). Maybe it could be inserted on the bottom of the page. But my thoughts at that time are only “half-ready” and untested and I do not know if this is “handy”.

But both are more or less easy addable to freeway docs.

Disqus is very mature and battle-tested. I recommend it heartily. In
fact, it can do a comment section on an otherwise entirely static
blog. Meaning you could make a “blog-shaped-static site” entirely in
Freeway, throw in the Disqus system in your posts’ Master Page, and
have something people could read and comment on in one whack. If there
was a similar tagging system, you would have the entire blog paradigm
nearly covered without any database needed on your server.

walter, thomas and dan…
thanks to all of you…
very helpful…
exactly what i was seeking …
will look at disqus and maybe consider ee depending on license terms…
have played around with pulse and web yep…
they just won’t work…
just got a blogger account, might try it with freeway…
would really prefer wordpress but don’t have the skills to make a theme…
why don’t we have a “freeway for wordpress” :-)…
i love what i as a non-coder can do with freeway…
i amazed that the program isn’t more well known…

Be sure to look at Joomla also. Just as much a learning curve as EE, but there is no usage fee involved. There are also a couple of helpful actions available as mentioned previously.

With a good book as reference you should have minimal trouble.

Hi all - hope you`re fine,

as said in my post above to build a blog in freeway maybe using boxmodel, webyep and disqus but being unsure, if this is even possible, I tried to built it by myself.

I did it, cause I haven`t had luck in integration my layout into blogger as recommended (… and I had fun to do - just as a reference and a good starting or ending point of discussion).

I`d like to invite you to have a look onto my result and would be happy if there is anybody having a comment to it.

If yes please visit (my beta site for testing stuff like this and soon shall be my mainpage):

Hope to see you there.
