[Pro] Baffled by Action Locations

I’m on Freeway 4.4.2. With it, I’ve got five web sites, one of which has a lengthy employment application form. (Took me a lifetime to create, but it works.)

I’m now trying to create a much simpler form on another of my sites. But one action that works fine in the previous site doesn’t even show up as an option in the site I’m working on now.

The action is validate.act3. It lives in user>library>application support>Freeway 4 folder>general folder. (Other actions in that folder are mixed; some reflect the .act3 extension. Others are .fwaction.)

It has never been renamed to read "validate.fwaction, and yet, it does show up and work in the first site. I’m going more than a little crazy with this and I’m also a little fearful of changing the name to fwaction. First, would that mess up the original site with the application form? Will it make it suddenly appear to the site I’m working on now?

This is exactly the sort of issue that’s scared me off from upgrading to Freeway 5 so far. But more to the point at the moment is just figuring this out.

Can anyone provide some insight?

Many thanks in advance.

Hi Laura,
Firstly, don’t panic! You aren’t going to do anything that will upset
Freeway and plunge you into a deep, dark hole of despair.
Actions can have one of four file extensions and they all appear
work; .txt, .act3, fwaction and .fwactionb
The .txt and .act3 extensions have been replaced b the newer .fwaction
ones although they all pretty much do the same job.
When the application starts it looks for any files in the actions
folder with these extensions and attempts to load them as actions. The
Finder name can be completely different from the actual action name
hat appears in Freeway itself so changing the name won’t have any
affect on what you see listed in Freeway.
My suggestion to you is if you have an action that doesn’t show up in
the application but appears in the actions folder then check the Edit
Actions dialog. Here you’ll be able to see if the action has loaded
and if Freeway has a problem working with it or not (it could be the
action hit an error at some point).
Regards,
Tim.

Tim, thanks for your reply. I’ve managed to sort things out, at least for now. But I’m going to save your response anyway because I do forms so infrequently that any kind of tip at all helps to unlock the mysteries of them. And I am, indeed, less panicked at the whole business of file extensions. Again, my thanks.
