[Pro] Blogger Newbie

I’m trying to integrate a blog into my FreeWay site and currently it’s a real mess. I don’t know if what I want is even possible. I would like the blog page to look like the rest of the website, but I would like the “content” of the page to be filled with content my client uploads via blogger.

For starters, the site is http://www.flowersongherbals.com and the blog is currently at http://flowersongherbals.blogspot.com/

(As an aside, I’m hopeful that eventually, the blog could live at flowersongherbals.com/blog. Is that possible?)

I’ve followed the instructions in the “freeway moments” podcast, but that seems pretty outdated. After struggling to find the “edit html” button on blogger, I reverted to the “classic” templates in blogger and was able to paste the code. However, as you can see, it does not look right at all.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? Oh, also if it’s helpful, I created my blog in a new FreeWay document rather than as a page in the main flowersongherbals file. Was that the right thing to do? It seems like I have some broken links.

Thanks to anyone who can get me pointed in the right direction!

David,

Thanks for the tip. I’ve tried playing with the documents setup and things are looking better. But the thing that really throws me is I only see one area to paste html on the blogger template. So far, I’ve used the bit from the “blogger posts” action. But where to I past the “blogger header” “profile” and “archive”? I hope this makes sense–I’m not sure how else to ask.

Hi Doty,

But the thing that really throws me is I only see one area to paste html on the blogger template.

… which is pretty brillant cause in fact you don’t need more.

The deal is easy:

Build everything in your freeway-page. Style it as you (like) need, cmd-p to enable the “code copy” within the action, copy to clipboard and paste this into the one and only HTML-area of blogger. Doing this, the entire HTML-Code of your construction page of freeway is now transported into the blogger environment. So everything is looking good actually - except the “center-page”.

Troubleshooting:

Use the “old version” of blogger. The new one has a bug in the “HTML area” - a blogger issue, nothing to do with Freeway.

Important note:

It might occur (and you may recognized this in the past) that Freeway publishes an imageb.jpeg after a few alterations and uploads (for whatever reason). So the path to the basic needed image.jpeg is broken for blogger. If this happens delete the entire content of your resources folder and let Freeway generate all the stuff new and shoot this up to clients server. This should fix “the broken paths”. Check this from time to time.

Cheers

Thank you Thomas! I’ve included comments below:

I don’t know how to fix this or what is causing the problem. I think part of the problem is the blue blogger bar. However, the center text isn’t working in the footer, either. Hmmm… Any ideas here?

I am using the old version, I think blogger calls it the “classic template.” When I was in the new version I couldn’t find a way to edit the html. It concerns me a bit that I need to revert to the old version. What will happen when blogger takes away this ability?

Yes, this has caused me problems in the past. I wish Freeway didn’t do this, but I will keep an eye on it.

Thanks again.

Confusingly, there are now two “old” versions of Blogger – kind of. There is Classic Blogger, which refers to the way the templates are coded. Freeway doesn’t support Classic templates so if you’re using that option you’ll need to switch back (there should be a big “Upgrade Blogger” button in the editing section somewhere), and the old interface, which is just the way the Blogger administration site looks. The new interface has just the same functionality as the old one, but (last time I checked) there’s a horrible bug in it that won’t let you add custom template code.

So, to wrap-up, it’s just the old interface that Thomas was talking about, not the old version of the Blogger templates.

Joe,

Thank you for the clarification. I will dig deeper into the blogger website.

I think everything is clear as mud. I managed (I think) to free myself from the classic template and return to the old interface. I uploaded my blogger page from freeway and repasted the code. After a couple of attempts, it seems to be working. There was a troubling note on the blogger page however, it said, “The old Blogger interface will be removed in the coming month. Upgrade now.”

Here are my other points of confusion:

–How can I remove the blue blogger bar from the top of the page? I saw in another post that someone successfully did this.

–I’ve made two “test posts” on the blog and blogger says they are published, but the page is still showing blank. In other words, my posts are not showing up. Any idea what I’m missing here?

–I would like to move this blog from http://www.flowersongherbals.blogspot.com to http://www.flowersongherbals.com/blog or even blog.flowersongherbals.com (and, additionally, would one be better than the other?). Again, I saw in another post someone seemed able to do this, but I can’t figure out how he did so.

Thanks so much for the help!!!

Here is one other anomaly I’ll through in for good measure:

When I’m in the edit html section of the old blogger interface, next to the orange save template changes button there is a preview button. If I select the preview button, I’m greeted with a page full of missing links. However, if I hit the “view blog” link at the top of the page, all my images so up mostly as they should. Strange…

Is there another way to do a blog from freeway that I should be investigating? If blogger is taking away the ability to edit the html I wonder where this is all headed…

Hi Doty

To remove the blue blogger bar you’ll need Tim Plumb’s appropriately-named “Blogger-Remove navbar” action from http://www.freewayactions.com/code/?f=Blogger-Remove+navbar.fwaction

All the best

That’s great, Gordon! Thank you. Does anyone have any idea why my posts are not visible?
