I just noticed a new version of Carousel 2. Walter, what was updated?

Bug fix, James Wages reported from Tokyo that the duration settings were rounding to whole numbers if you changed them from defaults.

So I’m clear on actions, every time an action is updated I need to completely remove the old action and reapply the new action for the changes to take place. In other words, simply updating the action doesn’t work. Is that correct?

Unfortunately, double-clicking the Action in the Finder doesn’t install it automagically like it once did years ago (or was that a decade ago now?). That’s why I feel SoftPress should click the double-click-to-install feature, since it doesn’t work properly most of the time.

Here’s what you need to do (sadly):

  1. Quit Freeway.
  2. In the Finder, hold down the Option key and click the Go menu, then choose Library.
  3. Open the Application Support folder, and then whichever “Freeway” folder you want to install new Actions into.
  4. Trash the old Action from Actions > General and then drag-in your new Action.
  5. Launch Freeway.
  6. Apply the Action and then check the version number at the bottom right of the Actions palette. (TIP: Due to what I assume is a bug in Freeway, the version number sometimes gets hidden. Just enlarge or shrink the size of the Actions palette itself to bring the version number into view.)

But again, I feel strongly that SoftPress should wave their magic wand and accomplish the above 6 steps in one fell swoop by a mere “double-click” on the Action in the Finder. There’s too much manual labor required to get Actions properly installed now. (I mention this in public because I know the good folks at SoftPress read this forum.)

Best wishes,

James Wages

What about dragging the action on top of the FW app icon in the Dock?

Doing that fails in the same way that a double-click fails. I’m not saying that doing a drag-atop-Freeway or a double-click will “always fail.” But in my years of experience, it fails “most of the time.” And that creates an enormous amount of confusion on the part of the user, which in turn surely increases SoftPress’s customer support burden too. Because you don’t always know if it fails. You think it doesn’t fail because it appears the Action was installed. But if you already had that particular Action installed, what happens most of the time with a drag-to-install or double-click-to-install is that the new Action does NOT in fact get installed, and you are still using the old Action. And like I said, there is a bug that sometimes hides the version number in the Actions palette, so you go about your business not knowing that the Action was never installed! It’s wicked, let me tell you.

Now for installing new Actions you never had before, go ahead and double-click or drag-atop-Freeway to install them. That seems to work. But most of the time, you will spend your time UPDATING Actions, so you need to follow my steps.

Simply put, follow my steps above. There’s no other choice.

Best,

James Wages

It does for me. That’s precisely how I updated Carousel 2 yesterday. In fact, the resulting dialog even told me it would be replacing an older Action.

In Freeway 6? Perhaps. I don’t know. But in FW5 it is NOT 100% reliable to do it that way.

But like I said, if you never had Carousel 2 installed before, then it will install just fine. I am talking about installing Actions that have older versions already installed. In THAT CASE, using a double-click to install is not 100% consistently reliable. My steps are 100% reliable every time they are tried.

And they aren’t MY personal steps either. That’s the only way to work around the problem. I have Walter Davis to thank for those steps, actually.
