[Pro] Carousel problem

For some reason several of the pages I’m using the carousel action o have ceased to work. I am having to re-apply the carousel pane action to a number or images on numerous pages. i some case also re-do the carousel buttons to get things working again. It was all working fine until Istarted doing some fine tuning.

Any ideas, shortcuts. It involves hundreds of images in total.

Thanks, Tom

Could you post a link to a broken page? Any JavaScript errors there might be instructive.

What sort of tuning did you do?

Also, did you update Freeway recently, but not the Action? There was an upgrade to both a couple of months ago that was kinda critical, and if Freeway and Protaculous aren’t the same generation, then you have about a 50% chance of the page being broken by library version conflicts.

Thanks Walt,

I’ve just finished sorting it out manually. I did indeed update Freeway (5.6.4). I reloaded the protaculous suite (0.4), and am hoping for the best.

The fine tuning was mostly moving images in the containers, adding a few images, changing the order of the stack. What I did notice that somewhere along the line some of the image holders inadvertently became unchecked in the layer boxes. Could this have started the entire problem?

Absolutely. Carousel and Carousel Pane want nothing to do with non-layered objects. I should make that more explicit in the Actions – have them throw an error if you try to apply one of them elsewhere.

Would that entail having redo all the panes as in my case, even if only one pane was “un-layered”?

Forgot the url: www.whit.nu
Please have a look and let me know if you see anything I could be doing better more efficiently.

Thanks again.

The pages I looked at all appeared to be working. One thing I did notice was that they did take a very long time to load completely, and until they do load, the effect does not work. So your problem might be just that you are expecting a zillion large photos to load as quickly as a few small ones.

Turn on Show Page Sizes in the site pane in Freeway (use the little cog menu at the bottom of the pane). Take a gander at these sizes (divide by 1,024 to get Kilobytes, again by 1,024 to get Megabytes). The Events page is almost 4.4 Megabytes! Anything over 1MB for a rich page is seriously pressing your luck.

  • Compress the images (make them physically smaller and use more aggressive compression techniques).
  • Use fewer images per page.
  • Consider using the Scripty Fader instead of the Carousel, as the former can ‘lazy-load’ images for a more responsive initial page load.

Great!

Thanks for the input. I was in on the scripty fader track but for some reason elected to go with carousel. I’ll have to experiment a bit to remind myself why I chose carousel.
