[Pro] Carousel Text Tab and Button act differently

I am experimenting with Carousel 2 and how to use Text Buttons and Text Tabs, and i am a little confused as to why they operate differently.

I have three Carousel 2 panes and i want to be able to go directly to any specific pane, even though the Carousel 2 is set to scroll automatically.
If i set a Carousel 2 text tab i can specify any target Carousel 2 pane… works fine
If i use Carousel 2 text button is cannot specify any target it appears that the target is already set and i cannot change it , i also get an option to set an Action Previous or Next

Why are these two options Text tab and Text Button operating this way?

Thanks

John

I am not able to repeat this here. Can you please confirm that you have done the following to create the text button:

  1. Draw an HTML box where you want the control to appear.
  2. Double-click inside it to get a text cursor.
  3. From the main menu, choose Insert / Action Item / Carousel 2 Text Button
  4. Click once on the inserted item and look in the Actions palette for the interface.

You should be able to see a control to choose which Carousel you are applying the button to, and which direction it will navigate, as well as the link text field where you may enter Previous or Next or whatever you like ( < > ).

This inline text Action works exactly the same way that all other inline text actions work – you click on the placeholder and the interface appears. Further, all inline text actions require you to enter the text they will generate in the Actions palette interface. You cannot apply Actions directly to text in Freeway.

  1. Draw an HTML box where you want the control to appear.

Yes done

Yes Done

Ok I get three fields, they are:-

Link Text … and i insert the relevant text i want displayed when the page is previewed int he browser, i then get

Target . . which is filed with one of the Carousel Pane names but i cannot change it. i then have…

Action . . with two options Previous and Next, which i cannot use as i want to select the target Pane and these two options seem to be meaningless at this point.

This inline text Action works exactly the same way that all other inline text actions work – you click on the placeholder and the interface appears.

Yes that works

Yes understood.

Walter,

I have put this one page test up on the following server.

http://www.reenoserve.com/Carousel2/

Please note that the first three Yacht 1,2 and 3 are text Tabs and work how i want.

The link Any Yacht (Text Button) is the issue i have as in the Action palette i get the option to select a target ( but i cannot change it) and then i have an Action which is set to previous,

Hope this helps,

John

Okay. The issue here is that you don’t understand what this text button is for. The button is not used to navigate to a particular pane, you instead target a particular carousel, and the control will scroll that carousel forward or backward. If you need to target a particular pane, use the Carousel 2 Text Tab Action. That’s what it’s meant for.

Walter,

If i wanted to use the Scripty Fader Action instead of the Carousel 2,

In terms of the Actions only does the Scripty Fader Action compare to the Carousel 2 action and is the Scripty Option similar to the Carousel Pane action. I am not talking in terms of functionality i am talking in terms of how i consider setting up Scripty Fader as an alternative to Carousel 2,

I have tired it and got myself into a right old mess

I am using your beta version .

Thanks again

ScriptyFader has two basic modes – automatic fade and click a thumbnail. This is roughly analogous to Carousel with Auto-glide on, and Carousel Tab as the sole navigation tool. I haven’t had any difficulties with applying SF to a page layout. Can you please describe the steps you have followed?

To answer your other question, yes, ScriptyFader Option is exactly the same as the Carousel Pane – it’s a “marker” Action that tells ScriptyFader to consider that element it’s applied to as one of its children.

The mental model you need to adopt with both of these Action suites is that there is a main element and N number of ancillary “panes” associated with that main element. These elements (the main and ancillary options) must be precisely the same dimensions and be the same sort of object as one another, and you must apply the main Action to only one of them – the one that marks where the effect should appear. All the other elements may be anywhere you like on or off the page (above the page on the pasteboard is a popular spot). They will be removed from the layout either when the page is published in Freeway or the page loads, depending on whether you are using the original or “2” version. Then, besides the main element and its panes or options, you will have one or more navigation options. These will either navigate to one pane at a time, or will target the main element and tell it to move one way or the other.

Walter,

Ok got this sorted, thank you, however have two comments:-

  1. Is there any way to change the transition time from one image to the next so that there is more of a fade out and fade in period (if that makes sense).
  2. Note that the images “flicker” or display twice when they first appear? when using Chrome and Safari, but appear OK with Firefox.

My Thumbnails need improvement, do you have any suggestions on the best way to create a thumbnail with betting clarity than i have on this test page please?

Once again the link is

I see that also, and can’t offer an explanation. The images are lazy-loaded on the first view (this is one of the design goals of this Action – to allow for a large number of images with minimal initial page load time) so you are seeing the flicker as the image is downloaded to the browser. That might be causing the flicker, but I don’t know why Safari and Chrome would have an issue with it.

Can you tell me what kind of issue you’re having with them? I don’t know what to look for here.

I just thought my thumbnails lacked some clarity, but you cannot expect too much from thumbnails i suppose…

Only by hacking the Action directly. It’s not a settable option.

Like any image you place in Freeway, you can control the “quality” of the compression using the Image Inspector, in the Output tab.
