[Pro] Caxton

I was wondering if you guys can give me advice. I believe I am using the caxton action correctly but I am getting reports that the fonts still aren’t being displayed.

Im not too sure what to provide for you to help me, but here is the url at least.

http://www.laurenbusteed.com

The body should be in a typewriter esque font known as myUnderwood.

Thanks very much for any help you can provide.

HI,
it looks as if it’s doing its job - I’m seeing the font in both Safari and Firefox here. Do you know what browsers aren’t behaving?

Looking at the source, it appears to be set up properly, which means that either the browser doesn’t support embedded fonts, or the embedded font files have not fully downloaded to the client machine.

It is showing up correctly in Safari but it appears in Times in
Firefox 3.5.7. Perhaps the visitors are using a browser that’s not up
to the job? This does require the latest versions…

Further comments:

In the HTML code I see that the myUnderwood font name is specified
but no others are listed in case the visitor’s browser can’t use this
technique. Go edit the font set and add some web-friendly
alternatives. Courier and “Courier New” are vaguely similar in
character shape, but they’re monospaced and spindly. You may prefer
to fall through to more regular typefaces such as Verdana or
Trebuchet.

You’ve specified most of your type sizes in percentages, by using the
non-specific size options. This can be a very good way of working,
but it is best done when most other things are also specified like
that, and the base size is established as well. You may find that
different browsers across Macs and PCs show quite different type
sizes. If this is an issue, redefine all your type in pixel (px)
sizes in Freeway.

Finally, note that the My Underwood font doesn’t have a particularly
wide range of glyphs. At the bottom of the scrolling text your double
exclamation marks (permit me an editor’s shudder) render as two
hollow boxes when the text shows in your custom font. Avoid using
characters that don’t work in the chosen font.

sorry to interrupt but I was just reading this thread and had a question.

I installed caxton -but Unsure how to make it work…

can any one give me directions on installation on selection of font and how to make it work…

This is something I could not get my head around when it was announced… and this thread inspired me to ask. THank you.

FYI the font looks correct in Firefox 3.6 (just update), but wasn’t correct in v3.5.7.

Also, it looks slightly different between Firefox and Safari, but the font is correct.

Curious that it is not being seen properly in Firefox 3.5, as there should be a file that that browser can read.

Check that the file MyUnderwood.ttf is in the Resources folder. If it isn’t, check that it’s in the kit you downloaded from FontSquirrel - if you moved it into your own Fonts folder instead of copying it, the Action won’t see it and it won’t be published.

It seems that later versions of Firefox can use other files that the Action uploads.

Keith is right - you need to specify some “regular” fonts for those folk who cannot see embedded fonts, and in your case using Courier would be a good second choice font.

Ahh… I believe that might be the problem. I have a feeling that I moved the .ttf instead of copying it.

I will add it to the resource folder and then see how we go.
Thanks a lot for your help.

I will add it to the resource folder

Manually adding it to the Resource folder is not a good idea. FW manages these files

if you moved it into your own Fonts folder instead of copying it…

So if you did move it then make sure there is a copy in the FontSquirrel kit as well as your Fonts folder and then FW will put it in the Resources folder for you.

Is there a concise list of browsers that Caxton will not work with (example: IE6 etc.)?

If you get your fonts from fontsquirrel then they claim:

Firefox 3.5+ , Opera 10+, Safari 3.1+, Chrome 4.0.249.4+, Internet Explorer 4+

http://www.fontsquirrel.com/fontface

Assuming caxton is the same as font-face :o)

Not sure what I’ve done wrong here then.

Works fine locally, as I have the fonts installed, but on any other computer (Mac or PC) it does work.

Neither work on any machine here - Junction shows as Verdana and Phoenix as Trebuchet - the substitute fonts.

Oh well, maybe one day.

Hi
I installed Caxton on a website I’m working on, followed all the instructions, included the css font file generated by fontsquirrel in the upload and via the inspector, but even on a PC running Firefox 3.6.8 in my own office, was not able to get it to work. It was fine on my design Mac, both in preview & when uploaded to web (iMac 3.6 gig core 2 duo running 10.6.4), but I’m assuming Caxton worked in this instance because it was on the same machine I designed the site on.
Eventually I had to resort to setting up a style for the font which would force the graphic character, but since you then can’t use html links, it kinda defeats the object of the exercise.
I would be grateful if anyone could look at my coding, and tell me what I’m doing wrong.
the site is: http://www.thelastbattleuk.co.uk/index.html
and the user name is: wwwthel Password: oskar2704
Many thanks for any help people can offer. I’d really like to get this one working properly.
Dick
