[Pro] CMS and Freeway 6

My client would like to be able to edit copy areas, add fliers that enlarge when clicked, and add videos. I have looked at Perch and Pulse but do not want to get into any coding and would like the client to simply press upload and the site would refresh without me doing anything on my end.
Suggestions?
I don’t like the look of WebYep, and have not had much luck with the upgrade of it to FP6.

You’ll have to deal with at least some minor code and Pulse is extremely easy to implement. It doesn’t get much simpler.

I would be willing to do some minor code, but will my client be able to make changes that will show up immediately without my involvement, or will I then need to upload from my side after he has saved changes?

In short, yes. Once you make edits and hit Save the content is updated. You just need to show the client how it all works. All CMS in my experience function like this, albeit with different levels of complexity.

How can anyone know this? Doesn’t this depend on your client and the
specific type of content they will want to upload?

Or is there really a one-size fits all solution when it comes to these
things?

Generally the Big 3 content types from the client’s perspective are text, images and video and most CMS handle each natively or in the case of video, through an RTE or other plugin. And assuming the client understands how to add/edit/remove each type of content the process should be fairly consistent across various CMS. I say “fairly” because each has their own flavor.

They can know it if they type copy into a designated area and save changes, then go to online to their site and the copy they just changed is there!

That is all I am asking.

That’s the essential reason for living for any CMS. If it doesn’t do that basic thing, then it’s not much of a CMS at all.

Defined: A CMS is a server-resident system that abstracts content from presentation, and provides a means of editing the content of the site without needing to manage or even understand the formatting or structure of that site.

An authorized user (editor) can see all of the content, add new content, or edit existing content, and the next person to visit that site will see the new and updated content immediately.

Thanks all. Sometimes even the most rudimentary questions must be asked by someone.

You’re absolutely right. Here’s a link to a longish description of a CMS in meaningful terms: http://cms.about.com/od/cms-basics/g/Cms.htm

LC, you may also want to look at MojoMotor http://ellislab.com/mojomotor. I’ve used it and it’s nice. It uses in-page editing controls like WebYep but is more polished and professional looking and might be slightly more feature-rich.

Thanks Walter.
I installed Pulse and am completely shocked at how easy it all is to upload, to place items into Freeway and everything else. I had already set myself up to have a frustrating time of it today lol.

I dove right in to Pulse.
However, I had considered MojoMotor, it looked like a good fit, but found it cost prohibitive.

I would also recommend Pulse for ease of implementation. Create the ‘blocks’ you need for the areas of text/images etc. and then paste into freeway via the crowbar action.

I would allow time to instruct your client into its use (true for any cms) and how not to stray away into trying anything fancy themselves.

Redactors (the supplied image editor) handling of images leaves a lot to be desired (though they are addressing these), have a good practice yourself, especially aligning images. As there is no centre align a tip (if required) is to use the indent to nudge images to a more central position, no text wrap either side of course.

You can also easily customise the login Pulse logo for your clients by changing over the relevant file - email@hidden I think.

Here is a very simple site I’ve just finished that uses Pulse for all body area content, contact form and news page and gallery. http://www.midathollcc.org.uk/index.php Client is in the process of adding content.

seoras,

I’m not sure if there are different versions of Redactor out there depending on the CMS (perhaps the licensing allows for independent development?) but the MODX version sold through modmore https://www.modmore.com has recently undergone significant changes/updates the past few weeks and it’s coming along quite nicely. I wonder if it’s the same version used in Pulse?

Also, I contacted you off-list a couple weeks ago about an unrelated subject, did you get my message?

Hi Todd,

Pulse is currently using v9.0.4. Think that’s just two updates behind. Redactor has made significant improvements to handling of images (hoooray !) since, so assume Mark at Pulse will be keen to add asap. Good to see that redactor are being proactive, takes time I suppose. The new version improvements are great, they just have to add an indicator for width and height, so you can get other images the same size and it will be perfect - and I’ll top complaining

Sorry Todd nothing came through off list, just checked. Try; george at silverytay.co.uk or george at scottish-photography.co.uk

V 9.1 - As per Marks’s Twitter post on August 5

Just updated Pulse CMS to Redactor 9.1 and it works great. Love that you can drag and drop images right into the textarea.

There must be different development versions because the MODX version was just updated today to 1.2.7-pl.
