[Pro] Concurrent versions?

Is anyone running Freeway Pro 6 concurrently with version 5.5?

If so, are you having any issues?

I am proceeding cautiously with this - first thing I notice after launching 5.5 is that it tried to open the file I had previously worked on in 6 (error, cannot open this version of Freeway file). Then I launched 6 and it tried to open the current 5.5 file (convert file warning). So I assume both apps share some resources.

This feels like a really bad idea but I’m not working on anything critical atm, and I’d rather rebuild some of my transitioning sites rather than convert them. Please comment if you try this as well, I will report back my own experience.

I do it. No issues, Big E. But let me ask: why will you rebuild sites instead of convert them?

Hey Tom,

The few sites I’ve converted made me realize how different dimension and
positioning controls are in 6. A lot of what it does now I have previously
accomplished by using the Extended style definitions. Opening these old
files doesn’t seem to get the positioning right because 6 does not consider
how I’ve used the extended styles for that purpose… but it’s easy enough
for me to rebuild the basic architecture then copy and paste the remaining
content - which is why having both versions open at the same time is so
helpful.

I know how all my files are built because I know how I want Freeway Pro to
build them. Conversion introduces a level of uncertainty for me – a loss
of control. Rebuilding assures me that I am master of my files. And that’s
they (uh huh, uh huh) I like it.

Hi Ernie

I am currently running both versions as i’m just exploring Freeway 6 and getting to grips with it’s new dimensions / measurements settings.

All seems fine, having just experienced those warnings you mentioned. Both apps list the same sites in ‘recent’, so it’s just a case of making the right choices.

I would ask, what is the best solution for a full width div when creating and ‘inline’ site. Gone is the option to enter 100% in the ‘single’ width box.

I have it working now in a trial doc, but wanted to know the best practice for this.

Thanks for all your great contributions to Freeway Talk - it’s a mine of information.

I’m interested to know that too - I’m half way through rebuilding my site using the inline box model method in FW5.5. I’d finally got my head round building that way (and really like it) but upon opening it in FW6… well, it’s not good.

Back to the drawing board. I’m aware of the new measurements system but didn’t think it would kill my nice CSS menu though :frowning:

Big E. I could not copy / paste a few elements from 5 to 6.
Make shure it works first with different elements. (In my
case I could not copy some pngs… have no idea why.)

Hi Alan,

Technically, you can set an html item to “Fixed%” and enter “100%” as the
value – this will produce the desired result, but I think a better way may
be to set the width to “Available”, which is closer to the full-width div
in FWY5.

You can also enter 100% in the dimensions segment (not the simple “width” field near the top) of the Inspector.

As others have mentioned, there’s the issue of Mac OS X only accepting “one ring to rule them all” and always picking the latest version to open any double-clicked file. I have three little Freeway icons in my dock side-by-side, 5, 5.6, and 6. I just drag and drop rather than double-clicking. Other than that, they keep to themselves and don’t seem to step on any toes. Completely separate preferences, which is a first, I believe.

I copied the site folder and have saved all files related to each version, separate in the Finder. I had the same error upon opening a document. Now I right click on my document and chose ‘open with’. Never thought of Walters idea to drag and drop!

Have imported my document in 6 and besides a problem with updating my ‘make item into footer’ action, it works fine. I had the css3 corners action in place and use it on allmost every page on two items. In 6 I cannot use it anymore, so wait with uploading through 6. This gives me time to learn how to create a inline site…can anyone outthere give me just the simple basics?
How responsive can sites be made now with 6?
