[Pro] Convert video files on mac ?

Hey folks new guy here with a problem. I recently made the switch to a IMac and love it. However, I am having problems trying to find a program to convert my Sony HD video files to something the Mac can understand and work with. So far every program I try can’t do it or converts everything but what I need. This will kill me because I have a ton of family videos and need to get them formatted into movies. Thanks for any help you all can offer.

I have been through some conversion headaches recently and know what your talking about. I do not know what format sony saves to so that is your search. I suspect that Quick Time (recommend getting 7 Pro) will open them and save in that format.

A great freebee is Miro Video Converter:

and heavier duty freeware is out there. The first thing is to figure out what format is best for you and sharing and the web, as you don’t want to convert over and over. I am sure I could answer better at a fresher hour, and no doubt someone with a better understanding will point you to a link at least. Seems we were having this discussion not that long ago.

Hope that’s a start.

What kind of files are they? I think Sony hardware outputs files using a .MTS (or similar) type extension. My HD video camera does, as does the PlayTV software on the PS3.

These are highly efficiently compressed video files - be aware that when expanded, and hour of HD video can occupy 40GB of hard drive space.

Generally speaking, iMovie or Final Cut Pro X should be able to expand these files into something you can use.

This is all assuming that the video files are as they are straight from the camera. More info on the files themselves will be helpful.

Another application to try converting files is MPEG StreamClip - http://www.squared5.com/

There is also VideoMonkey - http://videomonkey.org/

Do you mean AVCHD files? They will have a .mts extension.
If so, you can rewrap them into standard .mp4 files. There’s a program here to do it:
http://imp4converter.com/mp4converter_mac.html
but there’s also a way using a droplet called rewrap2m4v:

HI,
Miro, Handbrake, VideoMonkey, MPEGStreamClip are all free, and one of them will do the job you want.
