Should read: “I would like to shorten the page title in the site map.”

The title of the page in Freeway does not need to match the URL. If you make the Title something recognizable and shorter, that’s what will appear in the Sitemap.

To change the page title, the technique would be to copy the existing URL first, before changing the Title—then paste back in the URL. This is because changing the Title changes the URL to match until the connection is broken manually.

Incidentally, the fact that the title of the page does not need to match the URL, allows you to make the page name more readable in the Site Panel.

To better control how the Page Name read in the browser, I recommend using the Retitle Page action which I have as standard on all my Master pages. The name in the action overrides everything else—but does not affect the URL

Hi John

I’ve tried and applied in a test page the Retitle Page action, (as you suggested) this seems to work well with no issues. Thanks you for that.

That solves a problems of url changes If I need to rename a site page

The other issue I have more specifically is when the sit map is produce by freeway the resulting page contains the complete (or long) page titles of the site map.

What I’m after is the ability to change the result of the site map index i.e. I would like to change all the indexed page on the resulting site page index to more meaningful and shorter titles.

For example if the resulting site index contains a list that shows:

Home:
About oranges in the USA, Canada and the UK
Structure of oranges in the UK only

I would like the ability to change the result to:

Home:
About oranges
Oranges in the UK

Hope that’s a little clearer if not let me know.

The Retitle Page action governs what appears online, but it is not an action built by Freeway, so it does not affect the Sitemap.

To get the result you want in Freeway (and therefore the Sitemap) go back to my first instruction:

In the Inspector first tab under General, change the Title to whatever shorter name you want it to be: that’s what will appear in the Sitemap.

That’s all there is to it. But one precaution:

Because changing the Title can automatically change the URL below it, I suggest that you first select and copy the existing URL (the File Name in the box below) to your clipboard before changing the title. Then after changing the title paste back in the URL to the File Name box.

In future the URL will not change when you change the Title because the link has now been broken by your manual change.

Hi John

We’re not quite there yet. I think I need to clarify what I’m trying to achieve.

• I need the Page Title to remain exactly as it is. Changing this will affect the SEO.

• I would like the resulting Site Map created from Freeway to be editable before publishing or viewing it on the internet.

This will result in names on the Site Map Page that are more user friendly and meaningful.

Hope this clarifies my request.

Help is always appreciated.

The Sitemap action uses the page title that you use in Freeway. So use the short version of the page name there.

Then put the longer (SEO-friendly) name in the Retitle Page action previously discussed.

Excellent John

The last post cleared things up for me. The site index is now displaying exactly as I would like it to.

Appreciate your time and effort on this one.

Tony.
