[Pro] Creating Similar Websites

Hi; I need to create a website that is about 90% similar to an existing site I recently created in FW5. There are numerous video and audio files involved. I do not want to have to re-create the site, especially since it is so similar.

Ideally I would be able to simply copy the existing site and make the small changes needed, then save it with all attached files under a new name. This may have a simple solution, but I’m a bit skittish about monkeying with the original site file. Help would be MOST appreciated!!

The simplest solution is to do a 'Save as… ’ and save the Freeway file under another filename. Then, important, change the Site File… location to a new one. This will give you a mirror site to work with, without affecting the original.

Just to clarify - where I said change the Site File. I meant Site Folder - you do this in Document Setup.

A better solution would be to use the “Save As Archive” feature in Freeway. File > Save As Archive … then have it go to a folder so it thoroughly separates your two sites rather than sharing Resources.

That would be the ideal solution.

I’ve made a duplicate copy of the original site folder and renamed it. Then I renamed the site file in that renamed site folder. I opened the file and specified the new site file in Document Setup. That should do it, eh? It seems to have worked, unless I’m tragically overlooking something. New folder, new file, now publishing to the new folder. Does it sound like I’ve covered everything?

I have to admit that I’ve never fully understood all of this. I have a
folder labeled RWH Website v1 on my HD that holds a Media Folder, Site
Folder and two files with the Freeway icon (one is the backup file).
Couldn’t I just duplicate this RWH Website v1 folder and rename it v2?
Would that create some other problem?

Thanks.

Sounds good - but Dave’s good advice on saving as an Archive will add a folder of all the resources used that, if then edited, won’t affect your originals. (It just means you have two sets (or more) of ‘originals’ on you hard disk, in different locations).

Oops. I guess Matthew was asking the same question while I was sending
mine.

You will have a separate Freeway file to work on, under v2, but unless you change the Site Folder in Document Setup, I think you will overwrite the original Site Folder each time you publish or upload, because the file path won’t be otherwise changed within the Freeway document.

Ah, I think I finally get it. Thanks.

Yes, creating a new site from an existing one is made none too clear by the Freeway documentation. This thread has been enormously helpful. I also spoke to someone at the help desk (number listed on FW website).

After you’ve created the new site from the old one, you MUST rename the Site Folder in Doc Setup… Otherwise you WILL overwrite the existing files with the new ones. That much I’m sure of!

And don’t forget to change all the Upload paths and passwords etc (in your Save As version) or you might overwrite the files on the server too.

Sure thing, happy to help out. These kinds of situations call for a Save To Archive.

Best of luck with your site.
