[Pro] Credit Card Payments

Hello. Does anyone have a video or thorough tutorial on adding a commerce area to a Freeway Pro site? Something that would accept credit cards?

Hi Stephen,

am not sure if I proper understood this, but “checkout” and “payment” is usually part of the core-engine of the chosen tool (e-comerce system).

This means, that it’s hard to answer here as long as nobody knows which tool you prefer (mal’s, ecwid, eCommerce, FoxyCart and all the rest I forgot herby - gosh).

Furthermore I doubt that there is much stuff available, cause it is NOT part of Freeway basic work.

Cheers

There is a cart system bundled with Freeway, which uses Mals as its checkout engine. You need an account with MalsEcommerce, and then you can build a shopping experience in Freeway in a pretty straightforward manner. But when the customer gets to making their payment, they will be on the Mals site, not yours, and give their credit card and personal info to Mals. Your site will just gather the purchase details, and post that to the Mals server so the whole thing can be paid for.

I’ve built checkout systems for well-heeled clients that integrate the payment process directly into their sites. The requirements are pretty high – you must have an SSL-secured server, you must be able to pass PCI compliance, you must not store anything except a cryptological “nonce” of the payment card, and you better not be caught with CVV “security” codes anywhere on disk. Systems that allow you to have the “big boy” integrated cart and checkout generally start in the low $20,000 end of things, and go rapidly up from there, depending on features and scale of business. This is why many people use Mals and other carts like it – because they are not at that end of the market yet.

If you want an integrated experience, and you don’t have the up-front investment, another approach is to use a service like Spree or Shopify. They charge you a monthly fee, and take a bite of each sale, but they give you hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of software to play with, and are constantly evolving and securing their platform. Most of these services can be “skinned” to look just like your site, and with a custom SSL certificate and a DNS record, can be made to be “store.yourdomain.com” so there’s no loss of business credibility, either.
