[Pro] CSS menus and page add/delete

I’m using the demo version of freeway pro. I am having a hard time trying to make it keep track of pages properly. I expected it to add and delete links from the css menu correctly when I add, remove or change pages. It doesn’t. I added a few and removed a few and the links were not updated. I haven’t changed freeway from whatever the default settings are for anything.

The theme I’m using is cloud as it is closest to what I want but I don’t want the gallery page at all. I deleted it and it is still in the menu. I have done a ‘publish’ and it is still there. I added another page and that wasn’t generated there at all. I have used rapidweaver and that keeps track of menus perfectly well without me having to think.

Any ideas on where I’m going wrong?

The Action doesn’t work that way, although that would be really cool if it did! if you add a page, you need to add a link to the CSS Menu on your master page. If you do, the change will reflect to all pages based on that master.

That’s a shame. That’s a deal breaker really. It is supposed to keep track of changed page names with internal links so it doesn’t seem that far much of a leap to do the same with menus.

If it couldn’t keep track of added or deleted page name links then I’d have expected it to keep track of modified names - it didn’t. The whole idea of editing master menu items manually seems rather old fashioned.

I assumed it was just a glitch with the preview within the software but it was still wrong when I did a publish. I’d have expected the menu to update and reflect the correct site structure.

Even a manual ‘rebuild css menu’ process would do. Just as long as page names and links are maintained properly.

OK - but what about the scenario where some/all of the links in your CSS Menu are to external sites.

What is FW to do when some of these links are broken ie a site is down or a page has moved. Should FW delete that link?

I even tried manually editing the links on the master page menu and that didn’t work either.

All the links I’m trying are relative internal ones. I wouldn’t expect it to keep track of external sites.

If I have 5 pages and 5 menu items then it should keep track of those. If I delete one then I’d expect to see the correct 4 menu items displayed. If I add another page then I’d expect to see 5 items again and correctly linking to the correct page. If I rename a page I expect the renamed page to appear instead of the old page name and the master page menu to be updated to reflect this.

How it behaved with external sites should be handled differently. Those sites would have been added manually anyway.

That should be fine provided that the link between the Child page and the Master has not been broken.

On the Child page select the CSS Menu item and ensure that the Use Master Content box is ticked in the inspector

Thanks.

I think the menu items probably need adding as the very last thing to do after having all the pages organised properly if it isn’t possible for them to be kept track of.

if it isn’t possible for them to be kept track of.

Not automatically. But if you ensure that the Master-Child link between the CSS Menus is not broken then it is easy to update the links in only one place - The Master

Yes, it is easy when you have a single master, as all the changes immediately (after publishing) reflect to all pages inhering from it. Troubles start when you have more than a single location to update, for example when you have more than one language supported in your site (I have 3, and a 4th one coming…). In that case, since more than one level of inheritance is not supported by FW, you have to copy paste CSS menus. No trouble, really, at creation time. Trouble start when you have to modify in a similar ways all these menus from the master pages, changing colors or fonts for example. Partial or entire copy paste of the style only of the CSS menu would be great. Or some kind of inheritance mechanism between CSS menus of master pages.
