How do you get CSS sub menu links to appear horizontally across under CSS main menu like this example?

css menu = item 1 item 2 item 3
css sub menu = item2a item 2b item 2c

I can stack them vertically like this below but I am trying to develop the format above.

item 2
item 2a
item 2b
item 2c

Please advise how.

Unfortunately this doesn’t use the CSS menu action but if you don’t mind getting your feet wet…
