Have a look at Coppermine – that’s a very nice multi-user image
database, and it’s either a one-click install at many hosts, or a
quick upload and edit the conf file install otherwise. The look and
feel is customizable with CSS, but it’s not a Freeway-friendly
template system – there’s a separate header and footer file, and
skins for the middle bit, for example – so you’ll have to break out a
text editor or CSSEdit and Photoshop or similar in order to make it
look like the rest of your site. There are a lot of different skins
for it. One of the best things about it is that you upload a single
file, and all the intermediate sizes from thumbnail to various medium
sizes are generated for you.

Thanks for your replies.
Coppermine looks a bit complicated with a lot of information on the page.
I really need something that would be a lot more “clean” looking - like zenfolio.
Anyone got any of examples of Coppermine I could have a look at.
Well, I just googled “simple web image gallery” and hit on this
exhaustive list:
There are quite a few really elegant examples in there.
Note that using any of these will require you to bone up on some
server-side script skills in order to install it or make it look like
anything other than how it looks out of the box; but that’s a useful
arrow for your quiver anyway.

I noticed Jalbum on this list which I have mentioned in other threads, most recently in relation to the new Showcase in freeway 5.5 http://www.freewaytalk.net/thread/view/74922 They have a lot of skins - Skins - Customize your Online Photo Albums - jAlbum.net - apart from the ones it arrives with. Once you have chosen your album and put the pictures in you can upload directly to a folder on your server. This can then be placed on your site in an iFrame. Your client can also download Jalbum (free) and build and/or edit the pictures (for my client I set this up for her and she just drags and drops pictures in or out) then upload.
My current favored skin is Simple Viewer as it has a host of options within it which lets me match the freeway built site - fonts, backgrounds etc. No code is required. An example of it in action can be seen here http://www.cornelie-de-jong.com
I am hoping that Softpress can do something similar with Showcase and Joe Billing’s answer in the above mentioned thread is encouraging as I can see that more and more clients will want to edit their galleries.
Thanks for the link Walter - a visual feast!
I have had a browse through most of them (and certainly bookmarked the site) - one in particular seems to fit my requirements - with extended caption (imagevuex) and it looks like it is just a matter of my client uploading one set of images via ftp and adding text in an admin area.
Thanks too Richard - Jalbum is also a great gallery creator - very easy to use too - certainly, I will be able to make use of some of these in future sites.
