I want to use show/hide layer to reveal several photos. I want the second photo to fade in 6 seconds after the first, and the third to follow 6 seconds after the second, etc. I want a standard fade-in length of 1-2 seconds. How do I create delay(s) like this.

Take a look at the TransitionFX Action. That allows you to create these sorts of effects, with timing. To get the illusion of these 6-second delays, simply add the time of the first delay and first fade together to get the second delay, then add the second delay and the second fade duration to get the start time of the third.
