[Pro] Display Size by Design Question

Hello Everyone,

I am at a wall block on this issue - Display Size. I use Adobe Fireworks CS3 to design my layouts or images and insert them into Freeway Pro. All my work is done a Macbook Pro and the Monitor is set at display resolution is 1680 X 1050 Millions. This where I am stuck, I notice most of my friends Displays is set at 1024 X 768 if not 800 X 600. Looking at my HTML page/s with their settings is far from easy to look at - EVERYTHING is hugh.

If I take the same design in FW CS3 and redesign it on my mac with the display set at 1024 X 768 (Stretched,) Millions Color and insert that design into FW Pro it looks ok at the resolutions my friends have set. But, when I change the display to the highest setting on their system or my Mac in preview the HTML page is real tiny.

So, is there an answer to this wall? Is there a plugin or some type of action I can get for FW Pro that will allow my HTML design to ajust to the dispaly resolution when viewing by different display sizes?

Or, when designing my web pages should I than set my display to 1024 X 768 (which is a pain in the ass cause on my Mac it is hard to move around the screen?)

I notice those who have a monitor or notebooks that is meant to set the display at the highest resolutions DO NOT have it set there. Instead, they keep it at 1024 X 768 or 800 X 600 cause they can see the desktop or other items on their computer better. Although, the most new computers can be set or should be set to the highest - but most users don’t do it.

Any help here. Thank YOU!!!

Louis

I think the current convention is to make page widths 960px wide. One
good test is to look at some mainstream web sites, that are designed
to cater for the widest audience possible - modern sites are about
this 960px wide - to allow a 1024x786 screen showing a scroll bar.

You need to design your site with the largest audience in mind. You
can’t control how people actually view your sites, if they are set to
a too high resolution setting or too low, the whole web looks like
this for them, and they would not know the difference.

Hey David,

Thanks for the Reply. I thought there is some type of plug-in or action scripts that will accommodate the different screen sizes. One would think today’s technology we can control screen sizes just like TV’s. No matter what size a TV is, the picture is adjusted. So, why not the same with computer monitors? I guess technology is not as advanced as it seems.

Anyhow, Thanks again for the reply.

The difference with televisions is that the images are transmitted at
internationally agreed ratios and line densities. Web sites can be any
size or resolution, any shape or form and, again unlike TVs, no two
browsers interpret the same data in exactly the same way.

Is that all a bad thing? At least we don’t all have to design to the
same letterbox and we have freedom to scroll in every direction we
want (not that I’d usually recommend more than up and down - even that
conservatively - in most cases).

Actually, I’d say the opposite: the users you’ve observed are in a
VERY small minority. Most people run their computers at the display’s
native resolution unless they have real problems with their sight -
or maybe a game has set their resolution low and not put it back
again (and they haven’t noticed).

I find it best to work with the display at the maximum resolution
(1680x1050 on this laptop) so I can see my page designs AND the
various palettes AND whatever other apps I might use. And I make sure
I design to appropriate page sizes… generally around 950px width.

BTW, do you really use Firework to design your page layouts? I can
see why using it for creating graphics is a good thing (and Freeway
can use native Fireworks PNG files directly), it is a little strange
not to design pages in an actual page layout environment…

I think you’re missing an important point here. You are free to design
your site at any size, but the user is free to make their browser
window any size as well. It’s their browser, and they are doing you
the huge favor of looking at your site instead of one of googolplex
other sites available to them.

There are all sorts of scripts available that allow you (the designer)
to take over the browser (not owned by you) and make it a different
size. It’s easy to do.

But this is extremely rude behavior – to move something you do not own.

Applying those scripts to your site will get you blacklisted by the
users, who will object to this behavior, and will never return.
