[Pro] Ecommerce script suggestions please

Any recommendations for an e-commerce php or other script for including in FW 6 Pro (latest version) for an online store carrying initially hundreds of product items going up to approximately 5,000. Products need to be uploaded from a .csv or excel file with access given for client to initially upload product information and to update products and pricing.

The store needs to be a membership site and have categories and sub-categories.

At a later stage I also need to add on a facility for hiring these products.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Are these physical or digital products? How would fulfillment work? Are the products organized by SKU, or are they individual and unique (a la eBay)? What benefits does membership convey to the member?

Thanks for replying Walter.

These are physical products - audio visual products, to be shipped by my client to his customers. Organised in categories and then sub-categories, such as: Microphones>a range of different microphone products by different companies. It’s not a membership as such, but the customer will need a login in order to buy which includes delivery. We also need a facility for adding on hiring at a later stage, so that customers can choose to either purchase or hire for 24 hours, or for their needs.

I feel like you are on a tippy-point of build custom vs. off the shelf. OTS might get you up to speed immediately with 70% of your requirements, but in my experience, bending OTS to suit your exact requirements can become more expensive and time-consuming than building the whole thing to suit.

It comes down to how flexible you are on the requirements vs. how much money you have to spend up front for custom programming.

The issue with using OpenCart or something like that is that while it can get your “products in categories” and “need account to buy” parts out of the way quickly, I have never heard of a rental feature, nor can I imagine an easy way to add one. (You could “buy” a rental, as a product, but managing inventory and calculating when time was up so the item could be returned to rental stock would be a full-time grind of a job for a person – the software can’t do that itself.)

Exactly, I have been looking at OTS, just don’t like the monthly fees that most of them charge and some of the inflexibility with design. I spent a long time on live chat with X-Cart it’s looking possible with FW, but I’ll have to do the testing first. As mentioned the rental side is for later on, but we don’t want to have to do a rebuild when the time is right for the client to add this on. So need to get this right from the start.
