[Pro] experience

Hi guys,

Does anyone have experience in installing features for people with hearing and visually problems.

My client ask me about functionalities (rollover or something) to pop up text area’s and also voice support.

Or are there better apps or external programs to do this?

thx

Erik

The best way to help people with visual disabilities is to ensure that as much of your page is HTML text as possible. Anyone who uses a program to read the page out loud will appreciate that far more than pictures of text or other decoration.

The other thing to worry about is the hierarchical and semantic structure of your content. Start with a header which defines the page topic, follow that with a paragraph that sets forth your premise, then any number of h2s to introduce each sub-topic, and beneath each of those, a descending outline of h3, h4, etc, and paragraphs of text after each of those to explain the meaning of those sub-topics. Think of it like a well-organized research paper, or the roots of a tree.

Notice that I am describing things that you can’t just layer on top of a finished site. Also notice that these features will benefit everyone – sighted and blind – including Google, which is firmly in the latter category. I would be entirely suspicious of anything that relied on mouseovers. Imagine trying to mouse over something if you can’t see. Would you just stroke the page at random, hoping to find the header you were looking for? Better to use a proper outline format, so the machine can read it out loud.

I am not aware of a way to take a visually-designed site and magically make it usable by someone who is using machine reading technology, but I am convinced that designing your content so that it can be read by a machine will have spill-over benefits for all of your visitors.
