[Pro] File/Image naming conventions and how they are used by Search engines

I am aware that leaving spaces in file names is a no no. but i have also been advised that if i am using an image, the file name does not have to contain an_underscore, but a Hyphen-will be best, and that Alt text for an image can be Free Form. Both the file name and the Alt Text are used by Search Engines???

Is this Correct?

In the same context i have also read (i think) that meaningful text for a Hyperlink on a page is also helpful for Search Engine ranking??

So using this link (the word link is the hyperlink) is not as valuable as using this Freeway thread as the link (Freeway thread is the hyperlink)

So in the same vein if i have a “tool tip” linked to a hyperlink on a page would the “tool tip” also be evaluated and enhance the search Engine ranking??

Thx

John

Pretty much

meaningful text for a Hyperlink on a page is also helpful for Search Engine ranking

Definitely. ‘Click Here’ adds nothing while linking from ‘More Information about Widgets’ has added value. Key is link text relevance to add weight.

It might depend on how the tooltip was displayed. If javascript was used to display it then it is likely it would not.

There are arguments that tooltips can have negative SEO effects.

David, thank You.

My problem now is that if you create a file name for images using the hyphen to separate words, FWP then erases them when you import the image, so now you are back to a string of letters which i am not sure the search engines can correctly decipher, or do they even try ?

Not if you import as pass-through.

Dave,

I am using Pass Thru Images.

I just tested this before i posted and it worked for me. Now if you are using the image elsewhere then FW helpfully will use the other image resource with its original name.

Try copying the image and save it with slightly different parameters (so it is not exactly the same) and reimport as pass through.

If you use the web inspector on this page http://www.deltadesign.co/slide-out/ you can see the retained hyphens/underscores in the image file names.

Dave,

Thanks,

I am not brilliant at using the Web Inspector, i assume you are referring to the code viewer whilst looking at a page.

I noted the following

background-image: url(Light-Travels-Cover.jpg);

is this what you meant?

In respect to the page i am having issues with, the original problem was noted when i added a logo to the Master page, and this logo is definitely not used anywhere else.

The page i refer to is at:-

http://josullivandecorators.ie/

To test your suggestion i have imported the 1st image in the NewsCycle, this is also an image that is not used anywhere else. The file name is hyphenated however when it shows up in FWP the hyphens have been removed.

I would add an image to this thread but i do not know how to add screen shots to the thread here. sorry.

This is what I see when I look at your page with Safari’s Web Inspector

J OSullivan Painters and Decorators Glandore West Cork

As you can clearly see the image file is J-OSullivan-Painters-and-Decorators-Glandore-Weat-Cork.jpg

Note the Typo ‘Weat-Cork’!

Dave,

If this is from the Logo image i hand editted that one, and thanks for the typo hint

The first image in the News Cycle has not been edited and was a direct import as a pass thru image.

As far as I can see the first image in the News Cycle is IMG_0289.jpg followed by IMG_1026.jpeg, IMG_1028.jpeg etc.

Dave,

There are 5 images the first should be

JOSullivanPaintersandDecoratorsWestCorkHotelSkibereen1

and that is the issue the real file name has (hyphens) in between the words the other images are none edited 1026,1028,1032, and 1038

Do you have a cached page ??

OK,

Still slightly confused about this but, img_0289 was the original name of the photo in question, but i changed it to be more meaningful hoping to get on side so to speak with the search engines…

When i made that change and reimported it back into the page the ID changed from IMG_0289 to the new name but without the hyphens in between the words. I was under the impression that the ID was the src file name of the image but it isn’t…

Today i rechecked the Resources and made sure that the image with the new ID was in fact the image i wanted and sure enough the resources pointed to the correct image with the new image name…

Within the site folder the image still had the old name of img_0289… WHY IS THIS???

So i decided to Republish the entire site and upload and now i believe it is OK, BUT WHY DID I HAVE TO DO THIS??? and it is doing what i wanted in the first place the src is showing the img with the new hyphenated name…

But within FWP i still cannot find the correct place to locate what is effectively the src link info…

One thing i did notice before i republished, in the page view looking at the elements within the page and in particular this image it did show up with the new name without the hyphens and in [img_0289] to the right of the new name???

Is there a possible FWP issue here or is it me and my inexperience at using FWP?

As always thanks for all your help.

File>Publish Everything can clear out errors like this

Just be careful because that new image has the file name J-O’Sullivan-Painters-and-Decorators-West-Cork-Hotel-Skibereen.jpg

There is an apostrophe in there!

within FWP i still cannot find the correct place to locate what is effectively the src link info

Double click the container that holds the image and you will get the file name in the Graphic information box that opens.

Thanks for the tip ref the apostrophe…

Yes i did the double click, but i was obviously not looking closely enough at the top line.

Thanks
