[Pro] flash slide shows

Can someone please instruct me in how to get my Flash slide shows to work. I have them in separate folders in my site folder. I don’t understand how to get the ‘Full size resources’ folder to upload. When I do upload the site, the thumbnail strip works, but the ‘target’ images do not load. I don’t know code, so if the solution involves amending code, please put it in terms that a newbie can understand. I have been weeks working on this and am very frustrated. I am using some software that I recently bought called SWF 'n Slide Pro from Vertical Moon.

Hi Julianna

Now I have Swf n slide and I am assuming that it works the same way as pro.

In its easiest form once you have prepared your slideshow it is simply a matter of exporting. File>Export - Give your animation a name ie slideshow1.swf and set it a destination folder to export into also choosing Flash Animation from the Format selector at the bottom of the window.

Then you will have a file called slideshow1.swf which you can drag from the finder onto your FW page. Job done.

Upload to your server and you are there.

Pro may have other more complicated options but I am sure that it can also do it this way.

If there other files that are referenced from the slideshow.swf you may well have to use an FTP application to get them onto your server in the right place.

Is it more of a gallery type slideshow that you are trying to create?

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your quick response.

Yes, pro works just the same as far as I can tell. I have been doing everything just as you suggest and it works great as a preview in Safari. But when I upload, the target files do not work. Should the html page file that the slide show is attached to be in the same folder as the swf. file? I believe that I have tried it both ways…
I made a folder in FW within my site to save the slide show to. What else can I do?
I love the ease of the Swf software and I really want use it on my site.

Dave,

Yes, I guess the ‘Full size’ ref. folder that is generated for the target images is probably something that needs to be uploaded to the server. Why doesn’t FW upload it? I have never had to upload anything separate from the site before…I don’t have a clue how to do that. oh dear…

Why doesn’t FW upload it? I have never had to upload anything
separate from the site before…

The simplest way is to get an FTP ‘client’ app such as the excellent
Transmit or the popular CyberDuck (see http://www.versiontracker.com/
for download links) and use that to connect to your site using FTP.
Then just drag and drop the folder or folder contents to wherever it
needs to be.

Freeway doesn’t do this for you because it doesn’t know anything
about those files. It knows about whatever you add to your page, but
if that this needs further items then there’s nothing that would tell
that to Freeway.

But do remember: for an easy life, leave all possible uploading and
file management to Freeway, and only do things yourself when you find
a situation where Freeway isn’t in charge of something, as in this
case.

Keith,
Thanks so much for explaining that. This must be what I have to do then. I will try this…(finger crossed)

Just had a closer look at this and if you are using more than 1 slideshow like this the default “FullSizeSource” folder that Swf n creates can have its name changed to something more appropriate like “FullSizeslideshow1”

Under Slide Show>Slide Show Properties there is a Tab for Target. This is where (External Output Folder) you can rename your “FullSizeSource” folder to something else.

The reason being that if you are using more than 1 slideshow and try and upload more than 1 folder of the same name then that folder will be overwritten by the latest one. And then your slideshow will reference the wrong full size images.

Post a link to your page here Julianna - I am curious to see which slideshow theme you used for this.

Yes, I had been wondering about that since I am going to have several slide shows. That makes sense and I shall give all those folders appropriate names to reflect their contents.
I am busy making slide shows and so excited that after all these weeks of frustration , I can now make this work. Thanks again for all the help.

Just realised that if you uncheck the Load External box then the full size images will be embedded in your flash file and you wont need to upload the separate FullSizeSource folders at all!

Saves hassle of renaming folders and uploading separately but you will need to try it to see how it affects the finished flash file size. You dont want them too large.

Dave,
I will check and see how that affects the uploading and file size. Thanks for finding that. I have attached the link to my test page on my old site. I am ‘remodeling’ my site and hope to upload it in a few weeks.

Just watch your file and page naming and try not to uses spaces in file names. Far better to use _ underscores and - hyphens.

Some servers will fall over when they come across spaces like this.
