Is there any good way to synchronize Freeway with Dropbox? It seems that the one nice thing about Wordpress, for instance, is that if one computer goes down, you can continue work without missing actions or whatever. Very little downtime. Freeway seems to sprinkle stuff all over and it’s critical to keep actions independently updated on two computers, not to mention images and the FW document.
Hi laura the same freeway document can be shared by multiple computers without archiving the project up and passing it over.
What you do is first set up a shared dropbox folder
invite other people/computers with other drop box accounts to share that same dropbox folder
create a new freeway document and save it in the dropbox shared folder
create the site folder and again in that dropbox folder
You need to copy all assets into that dropbox folder prior to importing them into freeway… normally I just create a folder called assets within the dropbox folder
thats it as long as everything is residing in that dropbox structure, and you remember to import any images or assets from within the dropbox environment (not your mac hard drive) then all the other mac/developers will be able to open the same freeway artwork up and carry on working on the same project.
The drop box folder will synchronise and keep all the users up to date with the latest version
The only thing you cant do successfully is have more that one developer working on the same freeway document at the same time
Yes, this does work, I used to work this way with a client, although it’s not ideal as you have to keep checking that items don’t move when the client add or deletes information/copy.

agreed Dave, but this was a client who “had to over the power” to do this! Any wonder they are now a former client - client’s like that are not required! My other clients who want to make changes use Webyep, quite happily.

Thats too scary - letting your client loose on the FW file.
actually not with this one - I made a big mistake, but at least I’ve learned from it. They were on the phone wanting some tiny changes which I did straight away, they saw the changes happen and wanted to know what software I’m using. They bought the express version and hey presto we can do this they thought! My work had in their eyes become a template they could add to but still wanted me to do this big changes every month and then if they stuffed up, and email with a please fix was received. This led to the control file having to be held in Dropbox so that we all (3) worked off the same file, it led to hotch potch and lots of stress. So pleased to say goodbye!

You know you get gut feelings about these sorts of clients from the Get Go and still take them on.
Hi Everyone
My reply of the ‘dropbox sharing’ one freeway document method was not meant as a working solution for clients and developers… Its purely for developer to developer. If you do have a client who wants this sort of method, then think really carefully about the clients capabilities and then seriously think about a service contract to cover client mistakes and freeway document destruction!!!
This is a very real possibility if you both have the same document open at the same time, each from your own mirror of the shared dropbox. At best you will be able to recover any race condition overwrites by reverting in DropBox’s version backups. But more likely, this will take enormous concentration and communication to get right.
